Hello. My 13 year old son who is very into musicals was interested in seeing the Cabaret tour. We don't get to go to New York often (we've been there once and saw 3 shows in May) but we see a lot of shows through the tour. He loves shows like Rent, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd (he hates the movie though), and most recently, he's been loving the Fun Home recording. He says he loves the score of Cabaret and he knows the storyline of the revival. The movie is his favorite, but is the new revival appropriate? I don't know when this specific production is going to be around again, so he really wants to see it. Do you think it is appropriate for him to see? And is there anything else I should know about that is in the production that might be a little risqué (nudity, etc.) other than the main storyline of the cabaret? Thanks.

The show is a little risqué but it depends on his maturity level. There is some brief nudity but nothing full-frontal and there are some mature themes. I have not seen the movie so I don't know how it was handled there but if the tour is as good as the Broadway version and you have a little conversation with him about it it should be an enriching experience for both of you. Enjoy!

If he has seen Rent he is good to go.

^I concur.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I was about 12 when I saw the Mendez/marshal revival with Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson and to this day it was one of my favorite evenings ive ever had in the theater. Id say if he is a mature 13 year old who loves musical theater, then he shouldn't be too young to experience this show. It does have some adult themes and risqué moments, and I remember some things going over my head, but this particular staging is tame compared to how some directors have been trying to push the boundaries with Cabaret.

I was 13 when I saw the original revival. There were some moments that I didn't quite understand, but if he's aware of the plot (and you are as well), it's no worse then many movies out today. It definitely has some "adult themes", but it's nothing too, too bad. Just make sure you're aware of everything before going into it:)

Thirteen should definitely be okay. If he's seen Rent, he should be fine.
