Worst musical I have seen in a LOOOONG time! How in the world did it get so many nominations? Because Adams family sucks and they can't accept American Idiot as a real musical? I wanna barf.
So? I happened to like, I'm sure A LOT more other people seemed to like it. Their grosses are high, and people have different tastes. You shouldn't go around saying they don't deserve it, because they do.
I haven't seen it on Broadway, but I saw it in La Jolla and I thought it was great. Not the best show ever, but a nomination in a weaker season makes perfect sense to me.
Not the greatest show in the world, but very enjoyable.
It's nice to have a "Best Musical" nominee that actually has music composed for the story and characters on stage .... you know, like the old days.

It probably got more nominations because other people feel differently about the show. I hated Spring Awakening, but it won Best Musical. I sort of chalked it up to a difference of opinions and moved on. The Tony Committee and voters are made up of people who aren't me. Therefore, my opinion has nothing to do with theirs. Isn't it fascinating? Remember when Bush was elected president twice? No matter what he did? It's sort of like that.

"MEMPHIS makes one appreciate the greatness of HAIRSPRAY and DREAMGIRLS."
Only because it rips Dreamgirls in Act I (with a bit of Ragtime thrown in for good measure), and then in act II takes Hairspray's plot, even ripping You can't stop the beat in its finale.
It is pretty inoffensive dumb fun if you ask me. I do think Montego is great though!
