Photo Coverage: The IDIOTS Have Arrived in Toronto - AMERICAN IDIOT Opening Night!

Photo-Coverage-The-IDIOTS-Have-Arrived-20000101

It's official, Toronto has gone Idiot-crazy! American Idiot, the smash-hit Broadway musical based on the Green Day album of the same name, launched its much-anticipated North American tour in Toronto last night.  Starring Original Broadway Cast member Van Hughes as Johnny, and Canadians Jake Epstein and Scott J Campbell as Will and Tunny, the show literally blew the roof of The Toronto Centre for the Arts.

Many of the show's star studded creative team came to Toronto to celebrate the launch of the tour, including Director Michael Mayer, Music Supervisor Tom Kitt and Producer Tom Hulce.  Lead producer Ira Pittelman was also on hand, as were Andrea Lauer, Brian Ronan, Darrel Maloney and Lorin Latarro. Sponsored by Toronto's 102.1 The Edge, there were many familiar Canadian music and theatre celebrities in the crowd to celebrate the show as well.

It was also a homecoming of sorts for the Canadian members of the National Tour, returning to a Toronto stage after spending the last few months in New York City rehearsing.  Jake Epstein, Scott J Campbell, Gabriel Antonacci and Talia Aaron were welcomed with a warm reception by an audience full of proud Canucks thrilled to see these hometown boys (and girl) getting to launch what will be a primarily American tour.  It was thrilling and exciting to see the response these four actors received, and the accolades they were given were well deserved.

BWW is delighted to bring its readers all things Idiot, including coverage of the opening night performance, interviews with cast and crew and after-party pictures.  See below for pictures of the cast and creative team at both the afternoon press event and the after-party. The show runs at The Toronto Centre for the Arts until January 15th before heading off to Detroit, MI in the New Year.

Kelly Cameron's love affair with the theatre began when she was just five years old, on an outing to see the Original Canadian Cast of Les Miserables at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. She instantly fell in love, and since then has been lucky enough to be involved in various theatre activities and productions, including a regional production of A Midsummer Night's Dream and a local production of Where the Sidewalk Ends. She has also received training from various teachers throughout Southwestern Ontario in both piano and voice, and competed in vocal competitions for which she received a few awards. Her writing career started almost by accident, when she had the opportunity to become a ghostwriter for up and coming businesses. She continues to do this, writing the content for all sorts of companies who are starting websites and looking to find their voice.

Her passion and love for theatre led to her becoming involved with BroadwayWorld where she is thrilled to be writing for the Toronto contingent of the rapidly growing website. When she isn't at the theatre, you can generally find her firmly planted in front of her trusty Blackberry - tweeting, Facebooking or partaking in other such social media activities to ensure that those who want to know are kept apprised of everything that Toronto theatre has to offer. Other interests include movies, art, music, shopping, fashion and martial arts with the occasional foray into the world of finance.
