Cherry Jones to Return to the Stage in MTC's WHEN WE WERE YOUNG AND UNAFRAID in June 2014; Pam MacKinnon to Direct

Lynne Meadow (Artistic Director), Barry Grove (Executive Producer), and Mandy Greenfield (Artistic Producer) are pleased to announce Emmy and two-time Tony Award winner Cherry Jones will return to Manhattan Theatre Club at New York City Center - Stage I (131 West 55th Street) for the world premiere of WHEN WE WERE YOUNG AND UNAFRAID, the new play by Sarah Treem ("House of Cards," "In Treatment"), directed by Tony Award nominee Pam MacKinnon (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Clybourne Park).

The limited engagement of When We Were Young and Unafraid will begin previews Tuesday, May 22, 2014 and open Tuesday, June 17, 2014.

Jones returns to MTC after originating the role of Sister Aloysius in John Patrick Shanley's Doubt. For her acclaimed performance in Doubt, Jones earned Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lortel, and Obie Awards. Jones received her first Tony Award for The Heiress and an Emmy Award for her role as President Allison Taylor in "24."

Emmy and two-time Tony winner Cherry Jones (Doubt, "24") returns to MTC for Sarah Treem's ("House of Cards," "In Treatment") powerful new play that takes us inside an underground women's shelter in the early 1970s... before Roe v. Wade, before the Violence Against Women Act, before women had places to turn in times of distress.

Agnes (Cherry Jones) has turned her quiet bed and breakfast into one of the few spots where a woman on the run can seek refuge. But to Agnes' dismay, her latest young runaway Mary Anne is having a profound influence on her teenage daughter Penny, forcing each girl to question her destiny. And as the drums of the feminist revolution grow louder, Agnes is forced to confront her own presumptions about the people she's been trying to help.

Deeply moving and beautifully rendered, When We Were Young and Unafraid explores the passion of youth, the wisdom of age, and the people who awaken us to new possibilities.

WHEN WE WERE YOUNG AND UNAFRAID is presented as part of MTC's 2013-2014 season, joining the previously announced world premiere productions of THE SNOW GEESE by Sharr White, directed by Daniel Sullivan starringMary-Louise Parker; and THE COMMONS OF PENSACOLA by Amanda Peet, directed by Lynne Meadow starring Blythe Danner and Sarah Jessica Parker. Additional productions for the 2013-2014 season will be announced shortly.
