Alex Davis, Chris Henry Coffey, Christopher Ryan Grant and More Join SHAVING at Joe's Pub; Full Cast Announced!

SHAVING-20010101

Casting is set for the upcoming one-night-only world premiere performance of selections and music from Shaving, a new musical by writer/performer Alex Davis, at Joe's Pub on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 7pm. Based on his one-man-show, Alex Davis: Man of the Year, seen a year ago at the famed Knitting Factory Brooklyn, Shaving is a powerful rock musical memoir about love and self-transformation with music & lyrics by Alex Davis and a book by Alex Davis & Miranda Russo. Directed by Joseph Hendel and featuring a live band under the musical direction of Kris Kukul, Shaving features a cast of 7.

Tickets are $15 and are available at www.JoesPub.com or by calling 212-967-7555. Joe's Pub is located at 425 Lafayette Street, between Astor Place and East 4 th Street.

The cast of Shaving, led by Alex Davis, also includes Chris Henry Coffey (David Schwimmer's Trust), Christopher Ryan Grant (Million Dollar Quartet), Nikki Kimbrough, Grace McLean, Gayle Rankin (Tribes) and Miranda Russo.

Shaving is a personal, moving and humor-filled musical by singer/songwriter Alex Davis about his heroic evolution into a transgender man. The only child of iconic actor Brad Davis - the Golden Globe-winner best known for his acclaimed performances in the 1978 film Midnight Express and the 1985 premiere of Larry Kramer's groundbreaking drama The Normal Heart - who died of AIDS when Alex was just eight years old, Shaving exposes Davis's journey growing up without a father yet triumphantly transitioning into a new world of manhood. Of this courageous tale of love, self-discovery and transformation, Larry Kramer says, "Alex Davis is an extraordinary young man, with an extraordinary story to tell." A Critic's Pick by Time Out New York, Davis returns to New York for this special concert performance of Shaving at Joe's Pub. Shaving, directed by Joseph Hendel with musical direction by Kris Kukul, is produced by Lauren Fitzgerald.

Singer, songwriter, Alex Davis has been hailed as one of "the top 5 up and coming solo artists" by Music Connection Magazine. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he has been writing music and performing since childhood. His music was recently placed on numerous TV shows including MTV's "Pranked" and "Bad Dog" on Animal Planet. A new regular on the LA music scene, Alex performs at such noteworthy venues as The Key Club, The Knitting Factory, and Highways Performance Space. His songwriting, performed on acoustic and electric guitar, has been compared to Elliott Smith's poignant lyricism and the incisive emotionalism of Kurt Cobain. Alex's rock anthem, "Stop" was featured in the 2007 indie black comedy, "Holding Trevor." He has also performed in MTV's 2008 heralded video series, "How do I say this?" His sophomore EP, Man of the Year, was released in May 2010 to wide acclaim. He's currently working on his highly anticipated forthcoming album, the complete soundtrack to Shaving.

Joseph Hendel (Director) is a director and performer living in Brooklyn. NY directing credits include Moliere's The Learned Ladies, David Ives' All in the Timing, rare Ionesco and Pirandello one-acts, and a new farce My Daughter, My Wife at the People's Improv Theater. Assistant credits: The Dream of the Burning Boy (Roundabout Underground, dir. Evan Cabnet), The Seagull (Irish adaptation at the Culture Project, dir. Max Stafford-Clark). He has directed, written and performed short plays at Brave New Works (Pipeline Theater Co.), Fresh Ground Pepper's monthly shows, and the Culture Project's Impact Festival 2012. He regularly performs improvised musical theater at the Magnet Theater as part of the performing ensembles Aquarius and the Director's Series: The Narrator. He is also a trombonist, pianist, and a Story Pirate.
