On an island far far away (or maybe not), people spend their days making fog via a series of complicated machines. Their goal is to make sure “The Others” won’t come. They are led by three “Leaders” who keep coming up with increasingly absurd propaganda, spread online by their official “Influencer”. In the meantime, on the other side of the sea, people dream about building a boat and finding a beautiful new land. When the fog machines break, the Leaders’ lies are revealed… The narration is interrupted by moments of direct address to the audience, where performers break the fourth wall to share personal stories, songs and poems.
The show was created by 25 participants in LegalAliens' free classes for refugees and migrants, who are also performing it, directed by Lara Parmiani
Using a fragmented narrative, physical theatre and comedy, Tugging At The Sea asks audiences to recognise the absurdity of the propaganda against asylum seekers and celebrate shared humanity. Thanks to a collaboration with visual artist BernO’Donoghue, the stage will be covered in paper boats.
