Today, The Old Vic and the Lorax himself have announced the launch of e-tickets at The Old Vic.

The environmental loving ginger critter will return to the main stage from 15 October for a limited three week run, with patrons encouraged to join us by going green and opting to NOT print their ticket confirmation. Instead they will be asked to show their confirmation on their phone from which a QR code can be scanned by front of house staff. Whilst many theatres operate a print-at-home system, we believe that The Old Vic is one of the first theatres to actively encourage audiences to not press print and use their phones instead.

The Lorax says, 'I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.' We listened to our friend and over a transitional period The Old Vic will endeavor to be 90% paperless by its 200th Birthday in May. Paper tickets will still be available, on recycled stock, for those that need them but we are urging people to opt for the e-option.

This is part of a wider commitment to the building's sustainability as an independent, not-for-profit theatre looking to secure our future. This is no mean feat for a building that has been standing for 200 years and despite these limitations, The Old Vic is constantly looking for more ways to be greener.

Like the Lorax we care about the world around us and believe we must take responsibility and do our bit because after all, 'unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.'

In addition to e-tickets The Old Vic is also striving to be greener by:

  • Recyclable ticket stock: If our patrons do not have internet access, or in the case of group bookings, some printed tickets will be available. All remaining tickets will be printed on recycled and recyclable ticket stock
  • Takeaway items are now biodegradable or recyclable: In our all day café Penny, we have switched all of our takeaway items over to VegWare. All of these items are made from plant products, and can be disposed of as part of food waste - they are bio-degradable. This includes all of our straws
  • Good Energy Supply: We have recently swapped our energy supplier to Good Energy - a completely sustainable energy supplier. We endeavor to change our gas supply when our current contract comes to an end
  • Get backed by REGO: The Old Vic is 100% REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees Origin) backed. Every unit of electricity we supply comes from wind, solar, hydro and anaerobic digestion. We have a very strict procurement policy which means that we only supply electricity from deep green technologies (no biomass from forests, no waste from battery farms, etc.)
  • Recycle: We recycle all paper, glass, plastic through our mixed dry recycling with First Mile, who also supply all of our electronics, toner and cartridge, and battery recycling
  • Guide your audiences: We advise all our audiences that the easiest way to get to us is by public transport and we also explain this on our website: oldvictheatre.com
  • Cycle: We have a cycle to work scheme, which helps staff members to buy a bike and pay it off through their monthly payroll
