On tour the star attraction is Marti Pellow, former singer with Wet Wet Wet, who played Billy Flynn on Broadway last year. Whilst he is strong vocally – and American accent flawless despite strong Scottish vocals – his presence seems to be a letdown; his confidence isn't natural and there's no real draw to him on stage. It was no help tonight that he was dwarfed by two leggy leading ladies who both helped to emphasis this weakness.
No, the real star here is Rachel Stanley as Velma. With a short blonde crop, she's a strong comic actress with sparkling slapstick timing; especially in her two dazzling solo numbers – I Can't Do it Alone and When Velma Takes the Stand, both of which are highlights here.
Claire Taylor as Roxie is an ideal match for her co-star and gives an emotional performance in the second act – exploited perfectly in her late scene with husband Amos Hart (a likeable Christopher Howell). This production really brings out the drama of the show, especially in the stronger second act.
Accompanying Dan Jackson's 14 piece brass band is a slick - and might I say, healthy looking – ensemble, all of whom bring this show vividly to life. You'll be 'razzle dazzled' I'm sure.
