Company - Derby Playhouse

Saturday 16 April – Saturday 21 May (Previews 16 – 20 April)

Derby Playhouse present Stephen Sondheim's insight into the complexities of modern relationships, Company, directed by Karen Louise Hebden.

The pulsing rhythms of New York City underscore this landmark 'concept' show that ushered in the modern era of musical theatre.

On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed-bachelor Robert contemplates his unmarried state. In a series of vignettes and musical numbers, we are introduced to 'those good and crazy people,' his married friends, as Robert analyses the pros and cons of marriage.

Company began life as eleven one-act plays, which George Furth had written for actress Kim Stanley. After discussions with legendary director Harold Prince, the plays were reworked as a musical comedy with Sondheim composing the score and writing the lyrics. The result was clever, stylish and witty and shattered the conventions of the linear plot driven musical that had dominated Broadway for so long.

For Derby Playhouse, Company follows the theatre's well-received production of Sweeney Todd in 2004.

Company has a cast of fourteen including, Glenn Carter (Jesus Christ Superstar, Whistle Down the Wind) as Robert, Liz Robertson (Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady) as Joanne and Nicholas Pound (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) as Larry.

Musical arrangement is by Andrew Synnott with Moira Hartley as Musical Director.

Originally produced on Broadway in April 1970, Company went on to win 6 Tony awards, including awards for Best Musical, Best Lyrics and Best Music.
