Tori Allen Martin, multi award nominated writer included on the BBC New Talent Hotlist 2017, teams up with The Voice finalist Vince Kidd to present new musical BOXED for six exclusive shows at The Vaults, supported by the Arts Council England.
A segment of BOXED was originally written and premiered as part of Allen-Martin's Arts Council Funded 'Made In LDN' season of new musical theatre writing at The Cockpit, and recently workshopped at Theatre Royal Stratford East. It now has its first full scale outing at The Vaults, and audiences will have the chance to give feedback at this early stage of development.
Boxed features a diverse cast who tell a modern London story, featuring a commercial score written in order to engage a new kind of audience for musical theatre. It marks the launch of Allen-Martin's new company THE MADE IN LDN COLLECTIVE - a collective of diverse artists who create, devise, share ideas and actively help shape the future of musical theatre writing in this country - breathing new life into the genre and the way it's presented, and taking risks to get it up and on. Throughout the run there will be Q&As on the process of getting a new musical on as well as an informal meet and greets with other artists, as the collective look for additional founding members.
Boxed is directed by Visual Artist and Director, Phil Griffin who has worked with artists such as Rihanna, Jay Z and the late Amy Winehouse, and the cast includes aforementioned Tori Allen-Martin (Hair- European Tour and featured vocalist on Idris Elba's 'mi Mandela' album) Ej Martin - Offie nominated for Birthday Suit at the Old Red Lion, Matthew Marrs - Offie nominated for Odd Shaped Balls at the Old Red Lion, Liberty Buckland (Yarico - New Theatre Workshop), Eric Kofi Abrefa (Labyrinth - Hampstead Theatre and Humans - Channel 4) and Danielle Williams (The Sisterhood - Leicester Square Theatre)- with more to be announced.
Boxed is a story about a Britain potentially not too far away, the everyday struggles and the constant search for a connection in amongst the every day grind. Immerse yourself in voyeuristic vignettes of these people's lives, people like you, people like those you know and love, or maybe like the people you misunderstood. Witness the moments that changed everything, and the moments that looked like they meant nothing, but sent a ripple through the earth, so that nothing would ever be the same again.
One block of flats, seven stories, a secret, a break up, a lot of noisy sex, a bucket list, two rowdy parties, the first try of a cigarette, a splash of serendipity, and a whole lot of pressure.
