Proposals have been submitted to the London Legacy Development Corporation to move The Yard Theatre into a new building.

As part of a wider redevelopment of the Queen's Yard in Hackney Wick, The Yard Theatre's new building will become a place to promote arts in the local area and create links between members of the community.

Early plans demonstrate an expansion of seating, new offices and a new bar.

Executive Director Lucy Oliver-Harrison said:

"We're really pleased that the development plans for Queen's Yard include the re-provision of The Yard Theatre."

"We're working with the developer, London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), to understand what this will look like and ensure grassroots cultural activity continues to thrive here."

Artistic Director Jay Miller said:

"This exciting new building will make our work more accessible to audiences both locally and nationally, and it will ensure that The Yard's support for artists continues in the long term. This is the beginning of a process that we anticipate will take some years to complete."

"The Yard is always building, always moving, and we are looking forward to harnessing this dynamism in the building of a new theatre."

Described as "the most important theatre in East London" (Time Out), The Yard is a space to explore new ideas, to nurture new talent and to share new experiences. Built using recycled and reclaimed materials, The Yard has quickly earned a reputation for programming and developing risk-taking work by new artists. Work that has been discovered and developed at The Yard includes Michaela Coel's Chewing Gum Dreams, which toured internationally, including to the National Theatre's Temporary Theatre, and was made into an E4 television series. The Yard's production of Alexander Zeldin's Beyond Caring transferred to the National Theatre in April 2015 and is about to embark on a national tour. Alongside the theatre, The Yard bar hosts acclaimed music events, welcomes food residencies from a diverse mix of chefs, and stocks local brews and drinks.
