THE GLASS MENAGERIE Leads January's Top 10 New London Shows

London is never short of theatre temptations, whether splashy West End shows, epic dramas or bold fringe offerings. From a visionary Tennessee Williams revival to Wayne McGregor and a Dahl musical adaptation, here are some of this month's most eye-catching openings. 1. The Glass Menagerie, Duke of York's Theatre

John Tiffany revives his lauded staging of Tennessee Williams's masterpiece, with Tony Award winner Cherry Jones starring as faded Southern Belle Amanda Wingfield. The production, first seen on Broadway in 2013 and a big hit at Edinburgh last year, also features Kate O'Flynn, Michael Esper and Brian J Smith.

2. Escaped Alone, Royal Court

Caryl Churchill's dazzlingly inventive and intimately apocalyptic new play gets a welcome Court encore - plus a tour - following its much-praised 2016 run. James MacDonald directs Linda Bassett, Deborah Findlay, Kika Markham and June Watson, all returning as the enigmatic quartet giving an absurdist vision of a disturbing future.

3. The Kite Runner, Wyndham's Theatre

Matthew Spangler's adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestselling epic novel, which tells the story of a young boy in Afghanistan during the Soviet intervention and refugee crisis, finally gets its West End premiere after a successful UK tour. Giles Croft directs a cast led by Ben Turner.

4. Fantastic Mr Fox, Lyric Hammersmith

Following its Nuffield premiere, Sam Holcroft and Arthur Darvill's musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's typically anarchic tale comes to the Lyric (the latest addition to Dahl centenary celebrations). Maria Aberg directs Greg Barnett, Richard Atwill, Lillie Flynn, Gruffudd Glyn, Sandy Foster, Raphael Bushay and Jade Croot.

5. Woolf Works, Royal Opera House

Contemporary master Wayne McGregor's haunting ballet triptych, inspired by the life and work of Virginia Woolf and featuring music by Max Richter, was critically acclaimed on its 2015 debut. This first revival features Alessandra Ferri, Mara Galeazzi, Sarah Lamb and Natalia Ospiova. Read our interview with lighting designer Lucy Carter

6. Winter Solstice, Orange Tree Theatre

The UK premiere of Roland Schimmelpfennig's play, translated from German by David Tushingham, is certainly timely: a dark comedy about political conflict during family Christmas thanks to the far right resurgence. Ramin Gray directs Nicholas Le Prevost, Kate Fahy, Laura Rogers, Dominic Rowan and Milo Twomey.

7. Promises, Promises, Southwark Playhouse

This latest Southwark musical revival is the stage version of Billy Wilder's The Apartment: a subversive romcom featuring executive bosses using said apartment for extramarital affairs. It boasts a Neil Simon script and music from Burt Bacharach, and this production, directed by Bronagh Lagan, stars Gabriel Vick, Daisy Maywood and Paul Robinson.

8. Sex with Strangers, Hampstead Theatre

Emilia Fox stars in American writer Laura Eason's smart and steamy comic two-hander about a technophobic novelist trapped overnight in a secluded B&B with a successful, social media-savvy blogger. Peter DuBois directs this provocative exploration of love, lust and identity in the digital age.

9. Us/Them, National Theatre

Lauded in Edinburgh, this moving family show explores the real tragedy of the 2004 school siege in Beslan, Russia, when terrorists took hundreds of children hostage. It's a perceptive look at how the young process trauma and how we construct stories, with imaginative staging from the Brussels-based BRONKS.

10. Dean Strang & Jerry Buting: Making a Murderer, Adelphi Theatre

True crime buffs won't want to miss this visit from Dean Strang and Jerry Buting, defence attorneys for Steven Avery, who featured in Netflix docuseries Making A Murderer. The pair discuss his case as well as the US justice system in general, and take questions from the audience.
