REEFER MADNESS!
BRIDEWELL THEATRE, LONDON
PERFORMANCE: 28th MARCH 2.30pm followed by free discussion.
Entry to the discussion is free for audience members.
Come and discover the fascinating history of drugs propaganda and see how it has affected everything from government policy to Daily Mail headlines. The discussion will be accompanied by a screening of highlights from the original, 1936 Reefer Madness and the audience is welcome to field questions. Come along and join in, or just watch the fun!
Ben Goldacre is an award winning writer, broadcaster, and medical doctor who has written the weekly Bad Science column in the Guardian since 2003.
Mike Jay is an author, broadcaster and historian who has written extensively on history and culture of drug use and appears regularly on BBC TV, Channel 4, Radio 3 and Radio 4.
Steve Rolles is Head of Research and Information Officer for the Transform Drug Policy Foundation, a charitable think tank that seeks to reform drugs prohibition policies.
The discussion ties into the themes of the musical Reefer Madness! A biting musical satire of the 1936 black-and-white propaganda film of the same name, Reefer Madness! will - for the first time - introduce unsuspecting Brits to the harrowing tale of Jimmy Harper: a fresh-faced, innocent, all-American high school boy lured into the dangerous world of marijuana. Guided along the way by a colourful cast of characters, will Jimmy successfully navigate this seedy underworld and live to tell the tale?
Reefer Madness! was a smash-hit off-Broadway, and was transformed into a Showtime television movie in 2005, winning an EmmyTM award for music and lyrics.
One whiff and you'll be hooked!
