The multi award-winning musical theatre writing partnership George Stiles and Anthony Drewe will be joined by singer, radio and TV presenter AlEd Jones on Sunday 15 October at 2.30pm at The Watermill Theatre for a special event to celebrate the theatre's 50th anniversary year.
From their early days working at The Watermill on shows such as Honk! and Just So, Stiles and Drewe have developed an international reputation writing scores for numerous hit shows including the West End and Broadway production of Mary Poppins and new stage versions of Half a Sixpence and The Wind in the Willows. Honk!, originally commissioned for The Watermill, won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2000 and has been seen around the world by over 6 million people in over 8000 productions.
AlEd Jones rose to fame as one of the world's most successful boy sopranos, selling over 6 million records by the time he was 16. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before being asked to perform the role of Joseph in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Aled has recently reached number one in three charts with his albums One Voice and One Voice at Christmas. He releases the last in the trilogy, One Voice Believe, on 3 November.
Stiles and Drewe with Aled will perform a selection of songs along with other special guests, and will share insights into their careers, with Stiles and Drewe reminiscing about their time at The Watermill.
An Afternoon With... George Stiles and Anthony Drewe is one of a series of events to mark The Watermill's 50th anniversary. On Friday 13 October at 2pm, David Gollins, scenic designer, producer and artist, will return to The Watermill to describe why and how he converted an abandoned mill into a theatre, shedding light on the triumphs and challenges that he faced along the way.
Actress, activist and recent recipient of the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship award, Joanna Lumley OBE, returns to The Watermill on Thursday 12 October at 2pm for a sold-out event. Award-winning impressionist and actor Alistair McGowan will talk about his hugely successful career, recent venture into piano playing and his role in The Watermill's 50th anniversary production of Under Milk Wood (25 October to 4 November) in An Audience With... Alistair McGowan on Wednesday 1 November at 2pm.
