Soho Theatre Closes DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD, 7/10

With a childhood surrounded by alcoholism and petty cruelties, an adolescence of rebellion and punkish anarchy and an adulthood peppered with heroin addiction, voluntary crucifixion, failed suicide and a penchant for sex with prostitutes, Sebastian Horsley's life was always destined to become a work of art. This insane tale of the prototype of modern day dandyism has now found its spiritual platform in the heart of the crazy village he likes to call home.

Adapted from Horsley's no-holds-barred memoir and directed by fellow moral delinquent Tim Fountain, Dandy In The Underworld arrives at Soho Theatre with a bang this summer. Milo Twomey, newly back in the UK having completed an 18-month world tour as Alex in the acclaimed Kneehigh production of Brief Encounter, will play Sebastian. His notable TV and film roles include The Jolly Boys' Last Stand with Sacha Baron Cohen and My Spy Family.

Tim Fountain's previous stage plays include highly acclaimed studies of other Soho provocateurs Quentin Crisp (Resident Alien) and Julie Burchill (Julie Burchill is Away). No stranger to controversy himself, his own solo show Sex Addict, in which each audience was invited to choose a sexual partner for Tim online, was a sensation at the Royal Court in 2005. His books include Rude Britannia - one man's journey up the highways and bi-ways of British sex, and a biography of Quentin Crisp.

Sebastian Horsley is an artist, dandy and author who was perhaps best known for having undergone a voluntary crucifixion in the Philippines before beginning a regular column in The Erotic Review. His subsequent full-length memoir, Dandy in the Underworld, focused on his dysfunctional family, his drug addictions, sex, and his love of prostitutes, and unsurprisingly became a cult literary sensation. Soho Theatre's theatrical version coincides with development of the film, which has been optioned by Stephen Fry's Sprout Films.
