Funny Girl star Sheridan Smith has signed on to portray Sarah Sak in The Barking Murders, a forthcoming miniseries from BBC.
Smith joins comedy writer Stepehn Merchant and Jaime Winstone in the drama, written by Jeff Pope and Neil McKay.
According to Deadline, the series will tell the story of an Essex crime spree of rapist and murderer Stephen Port. Merchant will portray Port, while Smith will play Sarah Sak, the mother of his first victim.
Smith said: "'I love playing real life characters - especially an inspirational woman like Sarah Sak - but with it comes responsibility. Along with the other families, Sarah went through so much heartache and it would have been easy for her to just accept what she was being told by the police, but something inside made her keep fighting for her son."
