Daniel Evans, the newly appointed Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres, announced his inaugural season for the company commencing in February 2010. The season will launch the newly refurbished Crucible Theatre which is reopening after an extensive development programme.

The season opens with a new revival of Ibsen's An Enemy of the People directed by Daniel Evans, followed by the world première of Stephanie Street's Sisters - a verbatim play examining the lives of Muslim women in modern Britain, Roy Williams' There's Only One Wayne Matthews, a revival of Sam Shepard's True West, Alice - a new adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic tale by playwright Laura Wade, and the English regional première of Polly Stenham's award-winning play, That Face.

As Artistic Director, Daniel Evans recently appointed three Associate Directors to work alongside him - Paul Miller, Lyndsey Turner and Richard Wilson - each of whom will direct a production in the opening season.

Evans takes up the reins at Sheffield as the company prepares to re-launch its new building after a £15.3 million redevelopment. The Crucible closed for essential refurbishment work in December 2007, after the final performance of Amadeus. With Phase 1 of the refurbishment of Sheffield's Grade II listed Crucible Theatre, the next stage, now complete, the company are currently undergoing Phase 2, with the whole project due for completion early in 2010.

Daniel Evans said today, "Having had such fulfilling experiences as an actor at Sheffield Theatres, it has been extremely edifying to return to the company as Artistic Director. Running a theatre is something I've dreamed of doing since I was a teenager and, for me, Sheffield is the perfect place.

"It's a hugely exciting time for the organisation. As we announce a brand new season of plays, we are also preparing to reopen the Crucible Theatre after a £15.3m redevelopment programme. In choosing the plays for the opening season, I've concentrated on two guiding principles: first, I wanted to offer a variety of work (including classics, world premières, adaptations and theatre for young people), and secondly, I wanted to present plays that speak directly to the city of Sheffield and the region at this moment in time.

"Next year the Crucible will celebrate its 40th anniversary and I look forward to working with the team at Sheffield and the audiences in South Yorkshire to ensure that the company will re-establish itself at the forefront of regional theatre in the UK."
