Shakespeare's Globe Announces Casting for ROMEO AND JULIET and TWELFTH NIGHT

Shakespeare's Globe is delighted to announce casting for Romeo and Juliet directed by Daniel Kramer, and Twelfth Night directed by Emma Rice. Emma's 2017 summer season, the Summer of Love, marks the 50th anniversary of the summer of 1967. The season opens on 22 April with Romeo and Juliet, starring Edward Hogg as Romeo, and Kirsty Bushell as Juliet. Emma Rice's Twelfth Night opens 18 May and will star Carly Bawden as Maria and George Ikediashi, also known as award-winning drag performer Le Gateau Chocolat, as Feste.

Edward Hogg will play Romeo. Edward's previous work for Shakespeare's Globe includes The God of Soho, The Storm, The Tempest and Measure for Measure. Other theatre includes The Rest is Silence (Brighton Festival / Northern Stage / London 2012 Festival), Our Class (National Theatre), Pictures from an Exhibition(Young Vic) and Woyzeck (Gate Theatre/ New York). Film includes White Lightnin', Ollie Kepler's Expanding Purple World, Anonymous, Jupiter Ascending, The Program, Kill Your Friends and Bunny and the Bull. His recent television includes Taboo, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (BBC), Harlots (ITV) and Indian Summers (Channel 4).

Juliet will be played by Kirsty Bushell. Her recent theatre includes Boys will be Boys (Bush Theatre), Hedda Gabler (Salisbury Playhouse), Torn (Royal Court), Antigone (Barbican/Tour), I Know How I Feel About Eve (Hampstead Theatre), Belongings (Hampstead Theatre/ West End), The White Devil, Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Errors, The Tempest (RSC), Edward II, New Views 13, Edgar and Annabel, There is a War (National Theatre) and Angels in America (Headlong). In television, her work includes Silk, Frankie, Silent Witness, True Love, Roger Roger (BBC), Injustice, FM (ITV) and Pornography (Channel 4).

Golda Rosheuvel will take the role of Mercutio. Golda's recent theatre includes A Pacifist's Guide to the War on Cancer (Complicité/National Theatre), Wonder.land, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (National Theatre), Now We Are Here (Young Vic), Electra (Old Vic), The Frontline, Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare's Globe), Winter's Tale, Angels in America (Headlong), Marat/Sade, The Tempest and Julius Caesar (RSC). Her screen credits include Lady Macbeth and EastEnders (BBC). Tybalt will be played by Ricky Champ. Ricky's recent theatre includes A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hang of the Gaol, Love's Labour's Lost, Hamlet, Days of Significance (RSC), Bent (Trafalgar Studios) and Cannibals (Manchester Royal Exchange). Film includes Lost in London, Paddington 2, A Royal Night Out and Mortdecai. Television includes Lucky Man (Sky), Tracey Ullman Show (BBC/HBO), Him and Her, Dead Boss (BBC), Game of Thrones (HBO), Harlots and Wendy and Peter (ITV).

Martina Laird plays Lady Capulet. Martina's recent stage credits include Julius Caesar/ Henry IV/ The Tempest (Donmar Warehouse), Who Cares (Royal Court), The House That Will Not Stand (Tricycle Theatre), Moon on a Rainbow Shawl(Talawa Theatre Company, National Theatre) and All the Little Things we Crushed(Almeida Theatre). Television includes EastEnders, Missing (BBC), Epiphany, Coronation Street (ITV), London's Burning and Shameless (Channel 4). Harish Patel will play Friar Lawrence. His recent theatre includes Rafta, Rafta at the National Theatre. Film credits include Lies We Tell, Jadoo, Keith Lemon, All in Good Time, Today's Special, Run Fat Boy Run and Chicken Tikka Masala.Television includes Billionaire Boy, Mapp and Lucia, The Driver, The Boy in the Dress (BBC), My Freakin' Family, No.1 Ladies Detective Agency (ABC), Never Mind Nirvana (NBC) and Coronation Street (ITV). Blythe Duff will play the nurse. Best known for her role as DI Jackie Reid in Taggart (ITV), she most recently appeared in The James Plays at the National Theatre and for the UK and International tour.

Beginning 22 April, Romeo and Juliet will be directed by renowned theatre and opera director, and Artistic Director of the English National Opera, Daniel Kramer. Daniel's recent credits include Tristan and Isolde (ENO), Pélleas et Mélisande (Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatre), Carmen (Vlaamse Opera, Opera North), Punch and Judy (Grand Théâtre Geneva, ENO - Outstanding Achievement in Opera, South Bank Award), Bluebeard's Castle (Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatre - Golden Mask Award, ENO), Pictures from an Exhibition(Sadler's Wells and Young Vic), King Kong (Regent Theatre, Australia), Woyzeck (St. Ann's Warehouse), Bent (Trafalgar Studios, West End) and Hair (Gate Theatre).

The full cast comprises Jac Adu-Sarkodie, Siobhan Athwal, Kirsty Bushell, Ricky Champ, Tim Chipping, Blythe Duff, Keith Gilmore, Edward Hogg, Martina Laird, Jonathan Livingstone, SIan Martin, Harish Patel, Golda Rosheuvel and Gareth Snook.

Emma Rice's Twelfth Night opens 18 May. Feste will be played by George Ikediashi, also known as award-winning drag performer Le Gateau Chocolat. Theatre and opera credits include The Threepenny Opera (National Theatre), Porgy & Bess (Regent's Park Open Air), Imago (Glyndebourne) and Varjak Paw(Royal Opera House). George's drag act as Le Gateau Chocolat has toured worldwide, including performances at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Wroclaw in Poland and the Sydney Opera House. He has sung at Wigmore Hall and with Basement Jaxx at the Barbican. Other appearances include I Heart Chocolat at the Royal Albert Hall, Black with the Homotopia Festival at the Soho Theatre, and singing as part of the flotilla for the Queen's Jubilee.

Carly Bawden will play Maria. Carly's recent theatre includes the role of Alice in Wonder.land (National Theatre), McQueen (Theatre Royal Haymarket), Assassins, Pippin (Menier Chocolate Factory), Dead Dog in a Suitcase and Other Love Songs, Tristan & Yseult, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Kneehigh) and My Fair Lady (Sheffield Crucible). Television includes Close to the Enemy (BBC).

Anita-Joy Uwajeh will play Viola. Her recent theatre credits include Girls and Fury (Soho Theatre). Recent screen credits include Lucky Man (Sky 1) Cut (Channel 4), and Agent 47. John Pfumojena will play Sebastian, having most recently appeared in the National Theatre's Peter Pan. John's other credits include I Am Thomas (National Theatre of Scotland / Told By an Idiot), Playing Warriors and Workshop Negative (Tangle International).

Joshua Lacey plays Orsino. Joshua's recent theatre credits include Imogen (Shakespeare's Globe), Wonder.land, Everyman, One Man Two Guvnors, The Magistrate (National Theatre), Richard III (Trafalgar Studios), A Midsummer Night's Dream, Ragtime, Crazy for You (Regent's Park Open Air Theatre) and Billy Elliot (West End). Film includes Murder on the Orient Express and London Road.

Katy Owen will play Malvolio. Katy's recent credits include 946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips (Globe and UK/US Tour), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare's Globe), Rebecca (Kneehigh), The World of Work (Difficult Stage), Apparitions of Spirits with the Forsythe Sisters (Gaggle Babble), Maudie's Rooms and Plum and Cinders (Sherman Cymru). Her film work includes Daddy's Girl and Shopping for Happiness.

Annette McLaughlin will play Olivia. Annette's recent credits include Billy Elliot (UK Tour), The Odyssey (Almeida), Volpone, Love's Sacrifice, The Jew of Malta (RSC) and Matilda (West End).

Marc Antolin plays Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Marc's recent theatre includes Peter Pan (National Theatre), The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk (Bristol Old Vic and Shakespeare's Globe), The Trial (Young Vic), Taken At Midnight (Theatre Royal Haymarket / Chichester Minerva), Amadeus, Singin' In The Rain, The Music Man (Chichester Festival Theatre), From Here To Eternity (West End), Matilda (RSC/ West End), Into The Woods, Hello, Dolly! (Regent's Park Open Air Theatre), Billy Liar (UK Tour) and Imagine This (New London Theatre). Screen credits include London Road, Coconut Shy, Love Actually and More Than Love. Tony Jayawardena will play Sir Toby. Tony's recent theatre credits include Bend it like Beckham: The Musical (West End), The Tempest, The Roaring Girls, The Arden of Faversham and The White Devil (RSC). Screen credits include The Windsors (Channel 4), Strikeback (Sky 1), and A Street Cat Named Bob.

Emma Rice's 2016 season included the critically acclaimed production of 946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips, based on Michael Morpurgo's beloved novel, and a sell-out run of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which was broadcast live by the BBC and British Council. Most recently, she directed Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Matchgirl (and Other Happier Tales) in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. The production was adapted for the stage by Joel Horwood and Emma Rice.
