Following its recent sell-out season in London's West End, Birmingham Hippodrome is delighted to announce that the critically acclaimed Chichester Festival Theatre production of the musical SINGIN' IN THE RAIN will play Birmingham Hippodrome from Tuesday 18 March to Saturday 5 April 2014 as part of a national tour.
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is directed by Jonathan Church who was Artistic Director of The Rep, in Birmingham from 2001-6. The musical features a host of memorable songs by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed including Good Morning, Make 'em Laugh, Moses Supposes and of course the show-stopping Singin' in the Rain.
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN will star stage and screen leading man Maxwell Caulfield as studio boss 'R.F. Simpson', pop legend Faye Tozer as starlet 'Lina Lamont', James Leece as 'Don Lockwood', Amy Ellen Richardson as 'Kathy Selden' and Stephane Anelli as 'CosMo Brown'.
Maxwell Caulfield said "I am beyond thrilled to be hitting the road with Singin' in the Rain. As a huge fan of the original movie, the chance to bring this story to life on stage is something I couldn't pass up and it'll be great visiting some of the beautiful theatres on the tour, some I've been to previously, some are going to be a brand new experience for me. Theatre work is a huge passion of mine and having dealt with a few studio bosses in my time too, I relish the opportunity to play R.F. Simpson this glorious production".
Faye Tozer said "I am thrilled to take on the part of Lina Lamont in this classic musical. I've always adored the Singin' in the Rain movie and love the glamour and glitz of Hollywood in the 20's, so to get to deliver some of Lina's absolutely hilarious dialogue live on stage is a dream come true. The beautiful costumes I get to wear are a bonus too! Having toured around the country both with many theatre productions and of course with Steps, I'm also very excited to visit Birmingham with this gorgeous show."
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN tells the story of Don Lockwood a silent movie star with everything he could want - fame, adulation and a well-publicised 'romance' with his co-star Lina Lamont. But Hollywood is about to change forever. There is rumour in the studio of a new kind of film, where the actors actually talk...and sing...and dance. Can Don and the uniquely voiced Lina make the transition and will chorus girl Kathy Selden fulfil her dream of stardom and capture Don's heart along the way?
This production of SINGIN' THE RAIN opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre in summer 2011 and was extended due to unprecedented public demand. It then transferred to the iconic Palace Theatre in the West End in February 2012 where it received huge critical acclaim, four Olivier Award nominations, and played to more than 750,000 happy audience members, some leaving the theatre a little wetter than when they arrived!
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, includes half a mile of flexible pipe work, and a 10 tonne water tank and a water system that creates a downpour from above and flooding from below the stage. It rains (and recycles) over 12,000 litres of downpour per performance!
The stage production of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is based on the classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film and produced by arrangement with Maurice Rosenfield, Lois F Rosenfield and Cindy Pritzker Inc. This production is by special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Inc. Music Published by EMI.
