in association with Live From Leicester Square present SANDRA BERNHARD: WITHOUT YOU I'M NOTHING
Sandra Bernhard has been combining comedy and rock 'n' roll and courting controversy for 25 years.
Now the irreverent comedian, described by the New York Times as a "living, breathing bonfire", is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her breakthrough comedy show, "Without You I'm Nothing", with a special reworked West End version for 2009, backed by her band, The Rebellious Jezebels.
She will play 10 dates in the West End at Leicester Square Theatre, from Tuesday 26 May - Friday 5 June (press night Tuesday 26 May), to be followed by the Sage, Gateshead (Saturday 6 June).
In 1989, George H W Bush had replaced Ronald Reagan in the White House, Soviet war was waged in Afghanistan, and Sandra Bernhard was wowing Broadway audiences with a sizzling performance of "Little Red Corvette" - wearing nothing but an American flag G-string. "Without You I'm Nothing" toured the world and lead to a Grammy-nominated album and feature film of the same name.
An accomplished comedienne, actress, singer, and writer, Sandra Bernhard defies easy categorisation. Her live performances - part comedy, part social satire, and part cabaret - showcase her astonishing range of talents.
A former manicurist to the stars (her clients included Dyan Cannon and Jaclyn Smith), she first received acclaim in Hollywood as the obsessively neurotic groupie who attempts to kidnap Jerry Lewis in Martin Scorseses' 1983 classic, "The King of Comedy", a role that won her the Best Supporting Actress award in the National Society of Film Critics Awards. Her TV appearances include playing Nancy, a married woman who came out as a lesbian, on the hit sitcom "Roseanne" from 1991-1996, and guest starring roles on "Ally McBeal", "Chicago Hope", and "Will & Grace". In 2001 hosted her own TV talk show, "The Sandra Bernhard Experience".
Along with writing for performance, Sandra has put her musings into book form. Currently working on her fourth collection, her books, just as her shows, are full of personal insights, introspective rants, prose and essays. She made her publishing debut in 1987 with "Confessions of a Pretty Lady" and followed that up with "Love, Love, and Love" and "May I Kiss You on the Lips, Miss Sandra?".
"Give the dame her due, it's invigorating to be in the presence of a true original"
