A Spoonful of Sherman coming to St Helens Theatre Royal from Mon 26 - Wed 28 February, is a new musical stage show from Robert J Sherman which tells the compelling story of one family's century-long, award-winning musical journey.
Three generations of Sherman song writing are brought to life in this delightful show: from Tin Pan Alley songwriter Al Sherman; the Oscar and Grammy Award winning Sherman Brothers; up to present day, with songs from Robert J. Sherman's own musical Love Birds.
The show stars a highly talented cast led by Olivier-nominated Sophie-Louise Dann as well as A1 boyband member Mark Read; Glenn Facey; Jenna Innes; and Ben Stock.
It features much loved classics including A Spoonful of Sugar; I Wanna Be Like You; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers; Jolly Holiday; Chim-Chim-Cher-Ee and many more all-time favourites.
Leading the cast is West End star Sophie-Louise Dann who recently starred as Celia in The Girls for which she received a 2017 Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. Her other credits include Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Velma Von Tussle in Hairspray, an acclaimed run in Forbidden Broadway, and she is also a regular on BBC Radio 2's Friday Night Is Music.
Joining Sophie is musician and songwriter Mark Read, who rose to fame as member of the smash hit boyband A1. The group enjoyed two UK No. 1s, a further eight Top Ten singles, three hit studio albums and the 2001 Brit Award for Best Newcomer. Mark was recently seen on ITV's The Big Reunion and as part of the show's major concert tour. His musical theatre credits include Guys and Dolls (Epsom Playhouse), and Seasons of Love (West End) with Steps' Claire Richards and Chesney Hawkes.
The full cast also includes Glenn Facey whose theatre credits include The Wizard of Oz (Sheffield Crucible); Moby Dick! The Musical (New Union Theatre); and the UK tour of Hairspray! Jenna Innes who appeared in the title role in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Waterside, Aylesbury), and Young Molly in the London premiere of Some Lovers.
Completing the cast is Musical Director and performer Ben Stock who has appeared in West End shows Grease; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; and Dame Edna: The Spectacle.
The double Oscar-winning Sherman Brothers - Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman remain one of the most formidable song writing teams in family entertainment history.
From 1964 onwards, their unparalleled partnership produced music, songs and scores for dozens of films, particularly many of Disney's best loved titles including Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book, Bedknobs & Broomsticks, Charlotte's Web, and The Aristocats.
The highly prolific brothers were the sons of the great Al Sherman (1897-1973) who wrote songs for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and many singers of the golden American Songbook period of the 1930s-1950s.
Robert J Sherman, son of Robert B. Sherman and a successful composer in his own right brings the utterly compelling story of one family's century-long, award-winning musical journey to St Helens Theatre Royal this February.
