Padraic McIntyre, Livin' Dred Theatre Company's Artistic Director, will direct Pat McCabe's The Dead School at the Tricycle Theatre from 22 February until 13 March, with press night on 24 February. Designs are by Maree Kearns with lighting by Barry McKinny and sound by Cormac Carroll. The Dead School arrives at the Tricycle after a nationwide tour of Ireland in 2008 and a sell out run at the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival in September 2009, where it was nominated for three Irish Times Theatre Awards including Best Production.
The cast, who reprise their roles, comprises Sean Campion (Raphael Bell)
Carrie Crowley (Nessa Bell/Miz Evans/Others),
Peter Daly (Fr Stokes/Little Beggarman/Others) and
Gemma Reeves (Marion/Miss Kearns/Others). They are joined by
Nick Lee as Malachy Dudgeon.
Ireland of the 70s: crashing headlong into the warring forces of change and tradition.Schoolmaster Raphael Bell is devoted to traditional teaching values, while on the other side, Schoolmaster Malachy Dudgeon loves rock music and makes rules only in order to break them. When these two men and all they represent come together, chaos is only round the corner.
Pat McCabe's writing credits include Carn, The Butcher Boy - which won the Irish Times ‘Irish Literature Prize for Fiction', Mondo Desperado, international bestseller Breakfast on Pluto, Call Me the Breeze and Winterwood. Both the Butcher Boy and Breakfast on Pluto were short listed for the Booker Prize for Fiction and were adapted for the screen by
Neil Jordan.
Sean Campion's theatre credits include Much Ado About Nothing at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, Berlin Hanover Express at Hampstead Theatre, Enemy of the People and The Lady From The Sea at the Arcola Theatre and Phaedra at the
Donmar Warehouse. He was previously at the
Tricycle Theatre in The Quare Fellow and Stones in his Pockets - which transferred to the West End and Broadway and earned Campion nominations for an Olivier and Tony Award. His screen credits include Identity, Holby City and EastEnders.
Carrie Crowley's Dublin theatre credits include Faithful at the Mill Theatre, La Marea for the Theatre Festival and Peter Pan for Theatre Royal Waterford. On screen her credits include The Running Mate, School Run and The Ottoman Empire.
Peter Daly's stage credits include The Comedy Of Errors, The Shaughraun and The Cherry Orchard at
The Abbey Theatre, Life Is A Dream, Don Carlos and The Taming of the Shrew for Rough Magic Theatre Company and The Rep Experiment at Dublin Fringe Festival for which Daly was nominated for a Best Actor Award. His screen credits include Love Is The Drug and Fair City.
Nick Lee's stage credits include Three Sisters for Abbey Theatre, Delirium at the Barbican and The Freedom of the City at Finborough Theatre. His screen credits include Raw, Single Handed - The Stolen Child and Bachelors Walk.
Gemma Reeves' stage credits include The Cherry Orchard, Doubt, The School for Scandal, The Crucible, Romeo and Juliet, The Burial at Thebes and Seven Jewish Children, all for The Abbey and Peacock Theatres and O Go My Man for the Royal Court. Her screen work includes Malice, Aforethought and The Tudors.
As Artistic Director of Livin' Dred Theate Company, Padraic McIntyre directed their first fourteen productions including The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Belfry, The Tale of the Blue Eyed Cat, The Snow Child and The Little Dance Girl - which he wrote for the Company. Most recently he directed There Came a Gypsy Riding and Observe The Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme for Nomad/Livin' Dred. McIntyre's acting credits include The Green Fool and Two Houses for Upstate Theatre Company, Love Labours Lost for English Touring Theatre and Big Maggie for the New Vic Theatre.
