Nicole Zweiback's one woman play 'Bit of Sunshine' has achieved critical and audience acclaim and also won an award at it's premiere performance. This month, the piece is transferring to London's Theatre503. This intimate, candid series of photographs gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the show to date!
'Bit of Sunshine' is the result of a collaboration between two emerging companies, KILTER theatre and Bloody Deeds Productions, who met while training at East 15 Acting School. Co-directed by Ed Theakston and Katie Coull, and performed by writer Nicole Zweiback, the show has been praised for its haunting representation of a young woman's struggle with mental illness through the lens of an eating disorder.
Zweiback first started writing the play almost three years ago. In an interview she recently gave for The Tab she said; "I had briefly struggled with an eating problem when I was much younger, and ti was something that I was passionate about writing about, because I had met so many girls that were struggling with it. I wanted it to be seen in a piece of theatre."
In its debut performance at the LOST Theatre One Act Festival, 'Bit of Sunshine' won Best Play, and from there it was performed for a week at the Edinburgh Fringe. It received no less than five four-star reviews, and also passed the Bechdel Theatre test for women in theatre. Paul Vale, critic for The Stage, said it is "fascinating... an accomplished piece of theatre."
KILTER and Bloody Deeds have now teamed up with Theatre503, a powerhouse of new writing, to bring the show to London, on Sunday 25th and Monday 26th September at 8pm. The show is proudly supporting Beat, the UK's leading eating disorder charity, during its run.
