To commemorate and celebrate the life of Ian Charleson, The Sunday Times and the National Theatre collaborate annually to present these awards for outstanding performances anywhere in the UK by actors under the age of thirty in a classical role - defined as one in a play written before 1918. The judges this year were Wendy Spon, Michael Grandage, John Peter and Deborah Findlay, and Meera Syal was guest of honour at the ceremony.
The award was won by James McArdle for his performance as Platonov in Platonov at Chichester Festival Theatre, dir. Jonathan Kent. Platonov is currently in rehearsal at the NT, where it will be performed this summer as part of the Young Chekhov plays.
