The Follow Spot had a couple of events last year, one of which, a duets night with Oliver Tompsett and Rachael Wooding, was nominated for one of our 2014 awards in the Theatrical Event Of The Year category. These evenings are really starting to get noticed by audience, critics and performers alike. The caliber of performers on show is consistently excellent, as is the value for money on the ticket price.
Drawing chiefly from the musical theatre world, The Follow Spot also includes a healthy dose of comedic entertainment - there's a regular support slot for a comic and the night is held together brilliantly by "compere extraordinaire" Jess Robinson.
It goes without saying that Julie Atherton (Avenue Q, LIFT, The Last 5 Years, Tick Tick Boom, Ordinary Days) is an absolute seasoned professional with regards to musical theatre and demonstrated a masterclass in acting through song complemented with fantastic vocal ability - especially during I'll Be Here from Ordinary Days - a particularly stunning moment of the set. Other popular songs in the set included; the viral sensation Portrait of a Princess by Michael Bruce, My Party Dress by Kerrigan-Lowdermilk and Someone to Fall Back On by Jason Robert Brown. She was also joined by Marc Pickering (Les Miserables, Boardwalk Empire, Sleepy Hollow, Calendar Girls) for a rendition of the comedy duet Fine from Ordinary Days.
The wonderful Jack Shalloo (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Our House, Oliver!, Whistle Down The Wind, Departure Lounge) opened the proceedings, performing a short set including some of his own great material as well as a fantastic rendition of Lay Me Down by Sam Smith and a jazz-version of Who Will Buy from Oliver!.
Jess Robinson (Dead Ringers, The Now Show, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice) - an impressionist of such sublime vocal talent that has seen her feature on prime-time television shows. The regular "Wheels of 64 tunes" slot are absolutely hilarious, last night we were treated to Motorhead's The Ace Of Spades as performed by Lily Allen, Marilyn Monroe singing Poker Face and Sonia from Eastenders taking on Bohemian Rhapsody!
The series continues and goes on to showcase the West End talents of Daniel Boys (Mar 15th), Zoë Curlett & Sophia Ragavelas (Mar 29th), Ben Richards (Apr 12th) and Shona White (Apr 26th) before its first London season draws to a close.
