David Gilmore, Artistic Director of the St. James Theatre, today announces the next production at the St. James Theatre. Scenes from a Marriage, written by Ingmar Bergman, adapted by Joanna Murray-Smith and directed by Trevor Nunn will run from 11 September to 09 November. The press night will take place on 16 September 2013, almost exactly one year since the theatre's first press night, for Bully Boy by Sandi Toksvig, which took place on 18 September 2012.
Olivia Williams will lead the cast as Marrianne in Bergman's play, which was originally created for Swedish Television and acquired the status of a classic. The stage version was first produced in 2008 by the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, where it was also directed by Trevor Nunn. Original designs were by Rob Jones, and these have been adapted for the St. James Theatre production by Al Turner; original lighting was by Paul Pyant, adapted by Derek Anderson and fight direction is by Terry King.

Sir Trevor Nunn has been has been the artistic director for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre, and, most recently, the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. He has worked extensively in the West End and on Broadway and his productions includeCats, Starlight Express, LES MISERABLES (all West End), Macbeth, Othello (RSC), King Lear, The Seagull (both RSC, world tour and West End), Hamlet, Kiss Me Kate (both Old Vic), Birdsong (Comedy Theatre), Flare Path, Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead,The Tempest, The Lion In Winter (all Theatre Royal, Haymarket), A Chorus of Disapproval (Harold Pinter Theatre), All That Fall (Jermyn Street Theatre) and Relative Values (Theatre Royal Bath).
Olivia Williams has previously worked with Sir Trevor Nunn in his farewell production as artistic director of The National Theatre,Love's Labour's Lost. Her further theatre credits include Hotel in Amsterdam ( Donmar Warehouse), The Changeling (Barbican), Happy Now? (National Theatre) and In a Forest Dark and Deep (Vaudeville Theatre). On film, Williams has appeared in The Sixth Sense; An Education; Kevin Costner's The Postman; Wes Anderson's Rushmore; Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer, for which she won 'Best Supporting Actress' from the National Society of Film Critics, 'British Supporting Actress of the Year' at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards and 'Best Supporting Actress' at the Los Angeles Film Critics' Awards and The Heart of Me, for which she was named 'Best Actress' at the 2003 British Independent Film Awards. Williams' television credits include nineteen episodes of Joss Whedon'sDollhouse and Miss Austen Regrets.
Eight critically acclaimed productions have been staged at the St. James Theatre during its first year. Playwrights have included Sandi Toksvig, Timberlake Wertenbaker and Richard Greenberg; with directors including John Caird, Sally Cookson, Max Stafford Clark, James Dacre, Sir Jonathan Miller and David Grindley and with actors including Anthony Andrews, Barrie Rutter and Diana Quick.
