Not living in London, I do try and keep on top of West End theatre as best I can. There are a number of productions that are still on my "to see" list but I'm pleased to see that so many of the shows I have loved recently are nominated.
The musical I am championing this year has to be Kinky Boots. Featuring drag queens, glitter and music written by Cyndi Lauper, it's right up my street! I was thrilled when it was announced that it was coming to London and even more so at the casting announcement. Killian Donnelly and Matt Henry are perfectly cast and I'm afraid I can't just pick one of them for Best Actor In A Musical! Kinky Boots is my choice for Best Costume, Best Theatre Choreographer, Outstanding Achievement in Music and Best New Musical!
I saw Gypsy at the Savoy last summer and feel that Best Actress In A Musical has to go to Imelda Staunton. She really is as incredible as everybody says she is! My pick for Best Revival is Guys and Dolls, who have also announced an incredible casting for their UK tour which I can't wait to see.
I don't have particularly strong feelings about the Best Actor/Actress in a play categories. There were some comments on Twitter after another theatre award ceremony that indicated that those awards tend to go to the most famous rather than most talented but I think those remarks are a little unfair...
The 2016 Oliviers will be held at London's Royal Opera House on April 3rd.
