National Theatre Announces New Season Of Talks And Events

To accompany the new season of productions, a programme of talks and events will begin with a series relating to Exit the King. Philosopher Julian Baggini will explore the concept of free will in his talk Free Will: Do We Have a Choice?, blending philosophy, neuroscience, sociology and cognitive science. Exploring Exit the King will explore the current production, focussing on the practicalities of putting the show together with insights from cast members and theatre-makers. On 6 September, actors Rhys Ifans and Indira Varma will reflect on the challenges and rewards of playing King Berenger and Queen Marguerite, a talk will explore Three Perspectives on Dying and finally Director and Adapter Patrick Marber will talk about his new production. A combined ticket will also be available for these three talks.

Relating to Home, I'm Darling, Director Tamara Harvey and Writer Laura Wade will discuss their production and Actor Katherine Parkinson will reflect on playing Judy. Sadie Wearing explores Gender and Feminism in the 1950s and Today and there will also be a film screening of the 1998 film Pleasantville starring Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon.

Adding to the programme of events related to The Lehman Trilogy, The American Dream On Stage will explore plays that promote and break down the idea of the American dream, Sarah Churchwell asks Is the American Dream Dead?, Director Sam Mendes and Adapter Ben Power will discuss their production and the Jewish historical, cultural, and religious background of the Lehman family will be explored at Modern Jewish Identity: What it Means to be Jewish in America. Finally, Designer Es Devlin Studio will talk about the process of designing the show and offer the opportunity to step on to the Lyttelton stage to see the set up close.

Also adding to the current programme of events is Exploring Translations by Brian Friel with contributions from academics, theatre-makers, and insights from cast members, and talks with Actor Vanessa Kirby and Director Carrie Cracknell and Writer Polly Stenham, both discussing their production of Julie.
