New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley will spend the next severAl Weeks reporting on London theater, the Times has announced.
In his first report, Brantley discusses his feeling that the London theater reflects the city's economic anxiety, saying, "It always seems that my first several shows here become an uncanny confirmation of my impressions of the city's mood." Brantley also discusses several plays, including Simon Gray's "dramatically formulaic but meticulously acted" THE LATE MIDDLE CLASSES; the "vivid, gritty melodrama" SUCKER PUNCH, written by Roy Williams; and Neil Simon's PRISONER OF SECOND AVENUE, which stars Jeff Goldblum and Mercedes Ruehl and of which Brantley says, "Because Mr. Goldblum isn't playing the comedy broadly, the play's real depressive anger is all the more evident, which is probably not to its advantage." Brantley also attended YOU ME BUM BUM, an "immensely popular site-specific cult entertainment."
