The Lyric Hammersmith aims to produce work that is provoking, entertaining, popular, eclectic, messy, contradictory and diverse. We want to be at the heart of our community as well as being internationally recognised. We want to celebrate the unique vision of the writer as well as the creative power of collaboration. We want to work with the best theatre artists around as well as encourage the next generation. We want to lurch wildly between high art and populism - hopefully achieving both at the same time.

Beautiful theatre, cheap tickets, great pizza and a rooftop garden. Hammersmith and proud.

FUN, FROLICS AND FOOLS THIS APRIL

Spymonkey's MOBY DICK

By arrangement with Glynis Henderson Productions
A Spymonkey and Royal and Derngate, Northampton Co-Production
Lyric Hammersmith Main House

20 April - 01 May 2010

Press Performance: Friday 23 April, 7.30pm
Following a critically acclaimed national tour, the international comedy sensation Spymonkey brings its own glorious mis-telling of Melville's epic Moby Dick to the Lyric Hammersmith for its London debut, running from 20 April.
Trapped in the belly of a literary monster, four whalers ponder the irony of their fate as they recount their own unique version of the tale of Moby Dick. With fantastical flourishes and inspired invention, it is the greatest mis-telling of Herman Melville's classic. Spymonkey's award-winning brand of comedy is overflowing with brilliant characters, outrageous naughtiness and a delightful lack of respect for theatrical convention.

Spymonkey have proved to be a truly international phenomenon having performed in more than 20 countries from the US, Canada and Mexico to Syria and Taiwan. Their unique blend of physical comedy and explosive surrealism made them the uproarious highlight of Zumanity - Another Side of Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas. Over the last three years, they have been the smash hit of Brighton Festival, Just For Laughs Montreal, Melbourne Comedy Festival and have enjoyed two sell-out London seasons with their pulp gothic romance Cooped. More recently in December 2009 Spymonkey's Toby Park and Petra Massey starred with Ronnie Corbett and Sandi Toksvig in Christmas Cracker at the Royal FestivAl Hall, London and the company starred in Miss Behaves Variety Nighty at The Roundhouse in London.

Prior to Moby Dick and for one week only (13 -17 April) in the Lyric Studio, brothers John and Martin Marquez open their dark and quirky new play The Dark Side of Buffoon, directed by Timothy Sheader*. To round up April's month of comedy, Richard Herring hosts a Comedy Night with headliner Ed Byrne (Sunday 25 April) and a packed bill of rising comedic talent take over the studio for Lyric Lounge (Friday 30 April).

THE DARK SIDE OF BUFFOON by The Brothers Marquez
Lyric Hammersmith Studio

13 - 17 April 2010

A deliciously dark comedy set in an Italian circus at the turn of the 20th century. Written by and starring The Brothers Marquez, last seen together in the hit comedy Boeing-Boeing.

John and Martin Marquez play every part in this barmy production packed with laughter from start to finish. With effortless quick character changes, audiences have the chance to watch in amazement as they take on the wildly imaginative roles of a doleful dad, his simpleton son, a puppet brother and a missing mother to create a truly mesmerising show.

*Customers who have purchased tickets for the previously announced The Dark Side of Buffoon in the main house will be contacted by the Lyric Hammersmith Ticket Office.
