Riley's Odditorium, a once-successful travelling freak show has fallen on hard times, avictim of society's changing tastes, seeing the once awe-inspiring bearded lady or conjoined twins less as marvels of nature than shameful aberrations. The wagon is tatty, the fairy-lights flicker and the costumes have faded. They have already eaten the horse.
Owner Robert Riley knows his travelling show must adapt or die. So he comes up with a plan to keep his family of oddities together: they need to become better, more socially acceptable, versions of themselves ...whether they want to or not.
This magical and deeply human play set out of time and place but within an oh, so familiar society obsessed by beauty and normality will be an exciting kick off to Carriageworks Theatre's autumn season.
