Lost Key Theatre Presents DISTURBING THE DUST Image

Three old toys trapped in an attic, for longer than they can remember.

Every day the same routine until 'someone new' arrives.

As their little community is disrupted, their attempts to escape their confinement, each other and their own fears reach a crescendo.

Along the way they deal with loss, find joy and just might learn something.

A play for everyone who's ever been a child, who has ever grown up, or wonders if they'll every really know how to be a grownup at all.

A visually striking, rip-roaring and heartfelt show about love, about loss, but above all about a gang of old toys living in an attic. Take a peek through the hatch at the playful, violent and desperate world of a manic-depressive marionette, agoraphobic china doll and teddy bear with dementia. Discover where, if anywhere, their hopes, wishes and desires will take them.

From inside this tiny, fanciful, self-contained space, the show looks out at the world as it spins into ever more petrifying changes. With the need to grow up, to lock away our feelings and experiences, to become fearful of the outside growing ever stronger, the show asks questions at the root of the human condition. Do we ever truly 'grow up'? Do adults behave like adults? Are the elderly often treated most like children? Is there not something to be learned from our inner child about how to look at the world, how to treat each other, how to live?

The play uses quotes from the verbatim book "Growing Up In London 1930-1960" by Peter Cox, including detailed descriptions of childhood in the blitz. It is certainly not a kid's show, with a 12+ advisory and safety warnings for large bangs, grief, wartime PTSD and domestic abuse.

Lost Key Theatre was formed as a collaborative devising company by four East 15 Acting School graduates in 2017. They believe theatre should go in through the heart and gut, then go up to tickle the brain. Their work is highly physical, makes sensually sumptuous work on a shoestring, and is always about the universal human story. Their motto is 'play more'.

Disturbing the Dust is Lost Key Theatre Company's inaugural show, showing 2nd March, for one night only, at The Etcetera Theatre as a London preview before hitting Edinburgh 2019 this summer and beyond.
