London Writers' Week has announced an exclusive In Conversation event with leading filmmaker Amma Asante as part of this year's London Writers' Week.

Taking place on Wednesday 18th July at 4 - 5pm, the event will offer a unique opportunity to learn about Amma's award winning career and access her advice for writers who work in or would like to work in film.

Amma Asante is an internationally recognised, BAFTA award-winning Writer / Director. She was awarded an MBE in 2017 for services to film.

A Way of Life, her film debut, won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, and since then Asante has made major motion pictures Belle, A United Kingdom and Where Hands Touch. Her upcoming project is an adaptation of the book The Billion Dollar Spy, set in Cold War Russia.

Asante is currently on the jury for the Toronto International Film Festival's digital short film festival, TIFFxInstagram, and will also select the winner of the #shareherjourney prize, an award for an outstanding short film directed by an individual who identifies as a woman.

The exclusive London Writers' Week event will be chaired by Learning and Participation Manager at the Ovalhouse Theatre Titilola Dawudu and overseen by head of London Writers' Week digital media pillar Liberty Martin.

Jennifer Tuckett, Director of London Writer's Week, said: "We are thrilled to announce this new event for London Writers' Week 2018 with Amma Asante. This is an important opportunity to access Amma's advice on working as a writer in film and gain an insight into her career. We are also delighted to be running this event in partnership with our new partners Spread the Word, London's writer development agency, and 100% of profits from this event will also be donated to the four organisations promoting diversity in the arts who we are supporting this year".

Liberty Martin, head of London Writers' Week's digital media pillar and producer of the event said: "Amma Asante's important work, both as a Writer/Director, and as a mentor, is making a huge impact in film and we're delighted that she'll be part of London Writers' Week this year."

Titilola Dawudu, Learning and Participation Manager at the Ovalhouse Theatre who will be chairing the event said: "Amma Asante is leading the way in so many aspects of her career. I think it is important to highlight her work at London Writer's Week. She deserves the floor and I am excited to have a conversation with Amma, as she is an inspiration of mine."

The London Writers' Week event with Amma Asante will be run in partnership with Spread the Word, London's writer development agency, who are joining London Writers' Week as a new partner alongside current partners The Writers' Guild of Great Britain, The London Screenwriters' Festival, the London Playwrights Blog, and others.

This year's London Writers' Week is also donating 100% of all profits to organisations promoting diversity in the arts. The organisations which will be supported by this year's London Writers' Week are The Diversity School Initiative, which campaigns for greater diversity in drama schools and whose board members include Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director of The Royal Court Theatre, Actor Awareness, which campaigns for working class actors and writers and who recently starred in "The Acting Class" documentary with Maxine Peake, Christopher Eccleston and others, the London Playwrights Blog, an invaluable resource providing access to opportunities and advice, and University Women in the Arts, which aims to improve the transition from women studying the arts to working in the arts.
