A new musical play, Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, adapted by Billy Elliot author Lee Hall from Alan Warner's "The Sopranos," will premiere August 18 at the Edinburgh Traverse Theatre. Vicky Featherstone will direct the co-production between the National Theatre of Scotland and Live Theatre. The show will feature music by Handel, Bach and ELO! with musical supervion Martin Lowe (Once).
The story follows six girls on the cusp of change. Love, lust, pregnancy and death all spiral out of control in a single day. Warner's blisteringly funny dialogue ends in fireworks (literally). The musical play is about losing your virginity and finding yourself.
Lee Hall said he always thought the novel was "brilliant" and would make a good show. The adaptation, he said, is "in a rough and raw tradition of theatre which I really associate with the best of Scottish popular theatre. It's really unafraid, it's really in your face. It's funny, it's moving and sentimental in the best way. And the girls go on a sort of wild roller coaster ride, and my hope for the show is that we take the audience with them."
Vicky Featherstone calls "Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour" "A real celebration of young people - of female power" "It should feel like a real celebration of life and a memory of a moment that we all hope we had."
