In just two years, Little Gem has become the jewel in the crown of Irish theatre and Wexford audiences will get to see the hilarious play when it comes to Wexford Opera House from Thursday, December 2 to Saturday, December 4.
Written by Elaine Murphy, the tale of sex, birth, death and salsa classes follows three generations of women on a wild journey that throws up more than a few surprises. Since its debut at the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2008, Little Gem has gone on to earn the ‘Best Show' award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as sell-out seasons in New York, London and Paris. After a seven-week run at The Peacock in Dublin and a hugely successful stint at The Olympia earlier this year, Little Gem has been on a nationwide tour that winds up in the award-winning Wexford Opera House.
In this Gúna Nua/Civic Theatre production, acting veteran Anita Reeves leads the cast as grandmother Kay alongside Neilí Conroy as daughter Lorraine and Genevieve Hulme-Beaman as granddaughter Amber. While Kay is battling with an itch, Lorraine's boss wants her to see a psychiatrist after she attacks a customer. Then there's Amber, who is being used by Paul before he heads to Australia, and of course, Little Gem, who makes his presence felt and life is never the same again.
Using a perfect blend of slapstick humour and sharp comic timing, the stars portray a family trying cope with the daily pressures of modern life and the heartbreaking toll of inevitable tragedies. Described by The Sunday Times ‘as hilarious as it is poignant' and by The New York Times as ‘intimately told and beautifully acted', Little Gem is a bittersweet comedy not to be missed, which will resonate with women - and men - of all ages.
Catch Little Gem this December before it leaves for a tour of the UK and Australia in the new year!
