LIFT and Artsdepot Present NOT BY BREAD ALONE July 4-18

The world's first deafblind theatre company will bring their extraordinary show to the UK for the first time as part of LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) this July. Alongside this remarkable production led by Artistic Director Adina Tal, the venue - artsdepot - will host Café Kapish, staffed entirely by deaf waiters, the BlackOut Bar, where audiences will be served in the dark by blind waiters, and Touching Art - an art exhibition specially created by deafblind artists from the UK charity, Sense.

In Not By Bread Alone, eleven deafblind actors share their stories and play out their dreams as they knead, leaven and bake bread onstage. Joyous, funny and heartbreakingly powerful, Not By Bread Alone has taken two years in the making. With no way of seeing or hearing their fellow actors, the cast have had to develop new methods of onstage communication, relying on touch and trust to produce a matchless work of passion and co-operation.

For the ultimate egalitarian dining experience, audiences will also have the opportunity to eat in Café Kapish, where they will be encouraged to order in sign language from deaf waiters, while those after a beverage can drink in total darkness at the BlackOut Bar, served by blind waiters.

There will be a series of family-friendly workshops on Sunday 11 July, led by blind barstaff and deaf waiters. Visitors will be able to eat and drink, and mould clay in total darkness, or take part in a sign language workshop.

artsdepot's Apthorp Gallery will feature an exhibition entitled Touching Art, by Sense, the national deafblind charity. Touch is vital to the deafblind artists who have created the works in this exhibition, which includes painting, sculpture, and installation. This exhibition will encourage visitors to explore the artwork through touch, creating a tactile and truly sensory experience that reflects the way in which the art has been made.

Not By Bread Alone is the second production from Nalaga'at (meaning "Please Touch") Theatre Company.

1. The Nalaga'at organization was established in Israel in 2002, as a professional ensemble of deafblind actors. At the core of the project is a constant search for a unique "theatrical language" for the group, as well as the wish to take action towards increasing awareness of deafblind peoples' abilities, in Israel and the rest of the world. The Nalaga'at Centre in Jaffa Port, opened in 2007, creates workplaces for the Deaf, blind and deafblind, and allows its employees to make a living while expressing themselves artistically.

3. Not By Bread Alone is part of LIFT 2010; London International Festival of Theatre, which will take place 23 June-18 July across London www.liftfestival.com. Established in 1981, LIFT has risen to become one of the most important events in the British arts scene, with an influence that reaches far beyond London. Working with artists from across the world to find new ways of seeing the city, LIFT's rich and varied programming has presented extraordinary events in both conventional theatres and in more unusual spaces such as underground tunnels and hair salons.

4. Sense is a national charity that has supported and campaigned for children and adults who are deafblind for over 50 years. We provide specialist information, advice and services to deafblind people, their families, carers and the professionals who work with them.
