Whatsonstage.com is reporting that Legally Blonde is poised to be this season's monster hit in the West End, "reporting £2million advance ticket sales and a 'Beatlemania'-like atmosphere" at the Savoy Theatre, where the production is currently in previews.
Says Legally Blonde star Sheridan Smith who plays Elle Woods to the Evening Standard: "The audience reaction is amazing. They wait outside for me in the rain afterwards so the least I can do is say hello to every single person who waits ... it means hanging around for an extra hour but its more than worth it."
Producers claim that advance sales are unprecedented.
As previously reported, in an effort to maintain ticket sales surrounding the opening and beyond, Legally Blonde: The Musical is testing out a new reviewing policy in the U.K. whereby reviewers come a few days prior to opening night to better prep their comments, in addition to instituting the first ever ticket lottery in the West End. A common practice in New York, now London theater goers will have the chance to win up to 20 top tickets for just £10 during the previews of Legally Blonde 2 hours before each performance at the Savoy box office.
Peter Davison and Jill Halfpenny join Sheridan Smith, Duncan James, Alex Gaumond, Aoife Mulholland and Susan McFadden in Jerry Mitchell's Legally Blonde The Musical, which began previews at the Savoy Theatre on 5 December 2009. Currently booking until 23 May 2010, Legally Blonde: The Musical has now added Sunday performances to its schedules. Directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winning Jerry Mitchell, Legally Blonde The Musical has music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, book by Heather Hach, set design by David Rockwell, costume design by Gregg Barnes, lighting design byKenneth Posner and Paul Miller, sound design by Acme Sound Partners and orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke.
College sweetheart and homecoming queen Elle Woods (Sheridan Smith) doesn't take no for an answer.
