Why the return to the UK this summer ?
Scott: I was lucky enough to be on holiday in London when Hurricane Sandy hit New York City. I had no choice but to stay in the country as flights were not going in and out at that time. I had a night in town with absolutely nothing to do and so I tweeted about the possibility of doing a last-minute concert. A few moments later I heard back from
Nathan Amzi about sorting a concert for me that night. I wasn't sure if we could even sell tickets without any talent currently lined up but to my surprise we sold out in three hours at the Hippodrome. So, when he asked me if I'd like to be a guest star at a concert honoring my work at the IndigO2 inside the O2 arena, it was a no brainer for me.
Why this venue ?
Nathan: It's well known that the O2 is now the worlds best selling music venue so to be offered the opportunity to bring musical theatre to such a famous destination is thrilling. Only ten minutes from London's West End and accessible by boat on the Thames Clippers there's no reason that theatre lovers shouldn't be flocking to this amazing space. I have always been told to dream big and there is no bigger than The O2.
How did you go about selecting the guest performers ?
Scott: I have been lucky to have done a few concerts in London over the course of my career so I have known a few of the performers for many years so some of these performers are my family and including them was obvious. Having
Shoshana Bean (Broadway's Wicked) and
Willemijn Verkaik, who will be making her West End debut in Wicked this summer, alongside my pals from this side of the pond like
Ashleigh Gray,
Annalene Beechey, Nathan James and
Richard Fleeshman is just exciting.
Nathan: Knowing the impact that Scott's music has had on the audiences here in London really helped when reaching out to our incredible list of performers. Pairing the best vocalists that are emotionally connected to his words and music was as exciting for me as a producer as it is for the performers who are eager to sing it. We couldn't ask for a better and more eclectic lineup. All I had to say to get the cast on board was 'The O2' and 'Scott Alan' and everyone instantly jumped on board. No other questions asked.
What are you both looking forward to most on the night ?
Scott: I am performing at The O2 with some of my dearest and newest friends singing my work. What is there not to look forward to ? As the guest, I get this great opportunity to sit in the audience for most of the show and watch as an audience member. My whole family will be sitting beside me while we watch my work on a stage filled with a beautiful 15-piece orchestra, my dear friend and trusted musical director
Simon Beck conducting, and some surprises that even I don't know about yet. I am a fan of the theatre so to be able to be a spectator listening to beautiful and powerful vocalists whom I admire from the outside looking in I couldn't be more excited to be here and watch as a spectator.
Nathan: My main goal was to present Scott's music in a way that the audiences in London have never seen before. As Scott mentioned, there are going to be some incredible surprises including duets, trios and huge group numbers. To see legendary performers standing next to newer performers is a thrill. To have the biggest stars of today on a stage with the biggest stars of tomorrow is everyone's dream. As Scott has always been a great supporter of new talent, we will also be joined by a 'new' undiscovered talent whom who was picked from a YouTube contest. Imagine being an unknown just wanting to get your foot in the door and you are on a stage with the likes of
John Owen-Jones and
Julie Atherton? This is what makes working along Scott so exciting and makes us both understand how fortunate we both are. We are both fans of the legends but just as much a fan of those still undiscovered. We've all had to start somewhere so why not start at The O2 singing Scott's music, right ?
What is your biggest fear for the evening ?
Scott: My biggest fear is, where do you go next ? I am 35 and still have many more concerts ahead of me (I hope) but how do I ever top this ? There is truly no greater music venue in the world. This is as high as one can get.
Nathan: My fear is that the roof will be blown off from her finale. Our MD
Simon Beck has put together a finale that will have the audiences talking about for years to come. My only hint is that it's gonna be a DIVA off.
