On Sunday 24 February 2008, over 50 celebrities from the worlds of stage and screen will pay tribute to the life and achievements of world-leading vocal coach, Ian Adam, who sadly passed away in May 2007. Ian believed that he could teach anyone to sing and proceeds from the event will go towards a project called 'Singing for Breathing' that aims to help patients with respiratory problems at Royal Brompton Hospital, where Ian was treated for many years.
The concert, entitled "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" is directed and staged by Gillian Lynne and will take place at Her Majesty's Theatre on Haymarket in London. Those paying tribute to Ian on the night will include Sir Roger Moore, Jeremy Irons, Helena Bonham Carter, Elaine Page, Wayne Sleep, Bonnie Langford and Gloria Hunniford to name but a few. Singer, Peter French, is producing the concert and will also appear alongside the stellar cast.
Other guests expected to attend include Sally Ann Howes (to perform "Send In The Clowns" from A Little Night Music), Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent, Anthony Andrews, Robert Bathurst, Christopher Biggins, Isla Blair, Don Black, Peter Bowles, Lorraine Chase, Maurice Clarke, Richard Clifford, Tom Conti, Martin Crewes, Lorna Dallas, Anton Do Beke, Elaine Delmar, Camilla Dallerup, Edward Fox, Peter French, Susan George, Hannah Gordon, Nickolas Grace, David Greer, Georgina Hale, Susan Hampshire, Anita Harris, Patricia Hodge, Gloria Hunniford, Jeremy Irons, Clive James, Fiona Kennedy, David Kernan, Peter Land, Denis Lawson, Helen Lederer, Maureen Lipman, Gillian Lynne, Simon MacCorkindale, Siobhan McCarthy, Hilton McRae, Robert Meadmore, Sarah Miles, Jonathon Morris, Sir Roger Moore, Sian Phillips, Jonathan Pryce, Jan Ravens, Liz Robertson, Greta Scaachi, Gay Soper, David Soul, Terence Stamp, Una Stubbs, Ian Waite, and Susanah York.
Money raised through the concert will go towards the newly created Ian Adam Memorial Fund called 'Singing for Breathing'. The aim of the fund is to help staff at Royal Brompton Hospital to incorporate singing training into the physiotherapy and pulmonary rehabilitation programmes given to respiratory patients treated at the hospital. A previous pilot project organised by the hospital's arts department showed huge potential for singing to improve breathlessness and breathing control for patients with asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and emphysema.
