The beat looks finally all set to come to London as we pray that this time we really will welcome the 60's in London.
Hairsprays journey to opening in the West End has been far from smooth. Originally the production was expected to land at The Victoria Palace in 2003, then it was delayed and later confirmed to be opening October 2005 at The Cambridge Theatre. Casting and set-up began but in the Spring of 2005 the London premiere was, again, halted and then put on firm hold by Clear Channel (now Live Nation)
Now the show really does look set to open in London. The show is expected to start previews October 11th ahead of a press night dated for October 30th. Stage Entertainments will be producing the musical (currently running The Blue Man Group and Fame in London)
Soon to be entering it's 6th year on Broadway, the musical picked up a remarkable 8 Tony-Awards in 2002. The show continues to play to great houses and later this year the film is being re-leased in adaptation to its new musical foundings - the movie has stars John Travolta as Edna and Queen Latifa as Motor-Mouth Mabel.
Based on John Waters' cult retro 1988 film and set in 1960s Baltimore. The centres around the story of geeky teen Tracy Turnblad - a big girl with a big heart, big dreams, a big stage mother and even bigger hair! But can an over-weight, geeky girl like Tracy get the man and dreams she wants? Well look at Balitmore because its the 60's and the beat is stronger and things are going to change with Tracy right behind! The stage musical has a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Whitman and Shaiman. It's directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.
