What's going down?
When we kick off the Glee kids are feeling pretty pleased with themselves after their performance at invitationals. None of them are paying much attention and they think that taking sectionals will now be a breeze. Especially when it's considered that all that stands in their way is a school for the deaf and a halfway house for teenage girl delinquents.
Will, however, doesn't share the same outlook and confides in Emma that he doesn't want the club to get too complacent. Emma's suggestion of a sticker board doesn't seem the best of ideas but Sue gives him an ever caring piece of advice that they're "dealing with children here, they need to be terrified, it's like mother's milk to them." Every week she picks a Cheerio at random and kicks them out, just to ensure "the fear" is still there.
Cue a lightbulb moment when Schue realises that a bit of healthy competition is just what Glee needs. He splits them off boys vs girls, with Kurt not quite sure which side to join and tells them that he has planned a "glee off." Each gender must create a mash-up of songs of their choice and whoever wins gets to choose a song for sectionals. What's a mash-up, I hear you cry? Well "it's where you take two songs and mash them together to create an even richer explosion of musical expression."
Finally the kids begin to take the competition seriously as both sexes think they have what it takes to get one over on the other with the boys declaring that they're "planning on smacking them down like the hand of god." It's clear that Finn has his mind on other things as he looks completely worn out all the time.
Cut to Sue and the wonder that is her diary. I think we all need to take a moment here to relive the genius that is Sue Sylvester.
"Dear journal, feeling listless again today. It began at dawn, when I tried to make a smoothie out of beef bones, breaking my juicer. And then at Cheerios practice, disaster. It was unmistakable. It was like spotting the first spark on the Hindenburg. A quiver, that quiver will lose us nationals, and without a championship, I'll lose my endorsements, and without those endorsements, I won't be able to buy my hovercraft. Glee club. Every time I try to destroy that clutch of scab-eating mouth-breathers, it only comes back stronger, like some sexually ambiguous horror movie villain. Here I am, about to turn 30, and I've sacrificed everything, only to be shanghaied by the bi-curious machinations of a cabal of doughy misshapen teens. Am I missing something journal? Is it me? Of course it's not me. It's Will Schuester. What is it about him, journal? Is it the arrogant smirk? Is it the store-bought home perm? You know journal, I noticed something yesterday. Of course, it's coming clear to me now. If I can't destroy the club, I will have to destroy the man."
So just how exactly is Sue going to take down Will? Terri. Off she trots to the Schuester apartment and informs her that it's glaringly obvious that her husband is carrying out an affair with the school counsellor. Her suggestion is to pack up and move away but Terri isn't quite so convinced. Wanting proof, Sue suggests that she go into the school and sniff it out for herself. How convenient that there's a position of school nurse needing to be filled, not that Sue would have anything to do with that. Just how great a nurse Terri is going to be in questionable as she has little experience but first aid training is enough to get her the job.
Just as Will tells Emma she's going to be helping him judge the "Glee off" Terri walks in and promptly asserts her position as "Will's pregnant wife" and lets her know that she plans on sticking around.
In school Finn's walking around like a zombie, being "tired all the time." Being captain of the football team and Glee stud as well as keeping up with school work is beginning to prove too much to handle. Everyone wants something and he just doesn't have enough to give. While his main focus should be on his pregnant girlfriend he admits that he just can't get Rachel out of his head. Being stretched too thin he "gave up homework" but even that didn't help.
As the "Glee off" comes closer the girls have started to lose interest in the competition. When Mercedes suggests that they just "wing it" Rachel almost pees her pants, though the other girls are all too happy to go along with that plan. Over in the boys' corner there isn't much hard work going on either as Finn can barely stay awake long enough to go through choreography. Puck tells him to go and see the school nurse as he "hasn't been to a maths class in two years" due his complaint of "so-called" headaches.
Looking for help Finn turns to Terri in her new role, which surely can only be a bad thing. Mirroring her own sort of love triangle she promptly tells him off when he explains that he likes two girls. While the most obvious thing to do would be to stop a few extracurriculars she instead proposes that he get through high school the way she did, some decongestant pills.
They have the desired effect as Artie questions if his "soul has been taken over by caffeinated space aliens?" High as a kite, he gives the other boys the pills to ensure they give the best performance. After their performance of "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi mashed with Usher's "Confessions" the girls need to step it up as the boys really are competition. Kurt however spills the beans to Rachel about the pills, as while he was grouped with the boys his allegiance still lies with the ladies. Rachel confronts Finn about cheating but he gets defensive and tells her she's just mad because the girls are going to lose. Rachel then decides that the females are just going to have to take a dose of their own.
Quinn has been missing at rehearsals and Rachel decides to find out why. She rebukes her by saying that while Glee may be Rachel's whole life, she however has life outside of it. Rachel tells her that she should come back to the club as they, unlike others wouldn't judge her. When Quinn asks her why she is offering her help she tells her that now she knows what it's like to be her an outsider and that when the school finds out about the pregnancy "she's going to need friends." Soon "that cheerleader uniform isn't going to fit." The pair seems to finally share a mutual understanding as she decides to come back to Glee.
After seeing the effect this Vitamin D has had Terri decides that she should give the pills to more kids and sends Howard to go and pick up 36 more boxes. However this bright idea is overshadowed when Ken bounds up to her and declares: "I think my girlfriend is in love with your husband and I wouldn't be surprised if the feeling is mutual." After giving Ken a few of her special pills, Terri tells him to get a grip and that proposing to Emma is the way to hold on to her.
At lunch Terri tries to flaunt her relationship in front of Emma by kissing Will. However this backfires as he tells her that she needs to leave her job as the nurse as he needs space and her being at school just isn't good for their marriage. As Will walks out Ken takes the opportunity to propose to Emma which even I have to admit he did so rather adorably.
Back at Glee it's the girls' turn to perform. Equally high as the boys were their mash up of Halo by Beyoncé and Walking on Sunshine their performance goes down a storm. When it comes to the time to decide the winners Will instead decides to ask Emma if she's going to take Ken up on his offer to which she responds that she "can't think of any other offers", can he? I'm sure we all can. Terri catches this exchange in the hallway and goes to Emma's office. She tells her that she wants to clear the air but promptly tells her to back the hell away from her man and to do everyone a favourite by marrying Ken as she has no chance with Will.
Quinn decides to find out more about Terri's offer of taking the baby and raising it a Schuester. She likes her life just the way it is no and by having a baby she would have to give up things that she's just not willing to give. Terri is of course thrilled as her crazy plan seems like the might just work. Quinn tries to get Terri to pay for all her medical bills but she just isn't falling for that one.
In the locker room Emma considers Ken's proposal more seriously. We sense that this marriage would not be an ordinary one. She asks him just what exactly it would mean for the two to be married. She wouldn't want to be Emma Tanaka, live with him or see him pretty much ever. If the marriage were to remain a secret then she's game. True love, isn't it sweet?
When the principal finds out about the pills that Terri has been giving the students he isn't best pleased. Neither is Will and the pair eventually force her into resignation. Unfortunately this episode has caused Figgins to question Will and reveals that he's appointing Sue Sylvester to co-direct the glee club. Uh oh.
We end as Emma tells Will she's going to accept Ken's proposal. We can sense the heartbreak by the devastated look on Will's face.
11 o'clock number
There's no big number this week with the mash-ups from the club taking centre stage. It's hard to decide which sex actually outperformed the other. The creative's behind the show only get better and better as they put songs together you would never dream of working.
Quote of the week
Sue on reproduction: "Me, I've never wanted kids. Don't have the time, don't have the uterus."
Final Thoughts
How on earth can Emma marry Ken? Let's be honest as sweet as he is he doesn't have much going for him in any department. Surely if Will found out that Terri wasn't pregnant there would be a way for them to be together? His disappointment was obvious when she revealed she was engaged. Is Quinn really going to give Terri the baby or is she simply scheming to try and get money out of her? Either way that crazy bitch needs to get her comeuppance. Finally what is really going on between Finn and Rachel?
