Full casting is announced today for THE BROONS, a new stage play bringing Scotland's most famous fictional family to theatres across the country in a World Premiere adaptation by Rob Drummond. The Broons will open at Perth Concert Hall before dates in Inverness, Kirkcaldy, Stirling, Aberdeen, Ayr, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. There will be a press night at Perth Concert Hall on Thursday 29 September 2016 at 7.30pm.
The cast will feature Kern Falconer as Granpaw, Paul Riley as Paw, Joyce Falconer as Maw, Tyler Colins as Hen,John Kielty as Joe, Laura Szalecki as Daphne, Kim Allan as Maggie, Euan Bennet as Horace, Kevin Lennon andDuncan Brown as The Twins, and Maureen Carr as the Bairn.
Kern Falconer (Granpaw) has appeared on television in Hope Springs, Wedding Belles and River City, all for BBC Scotland. His many theatre credits including The Venetian Twins (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh), Kill Johnny Glendenning (Citizens Theatre, Glasgow) and Dad's Army Marches On (UK Tour).
Paul Riley (Paw) is an actor and comedian. Television work includes Chewin' the Fat and Still Game, for which he won a Scottish BAFTA in 2006. He also wrote and starred in Dear Green Place for which he won a Scottish BAFTA for Best Entertainment. His previous work with the National Theatre of Scotland includes Appointment with the Wickerman. His other recent theatre work includes Ulysses (Tron, Glasgow) and Still Game Live (Hydro, Glasgow).
Joyce Falconer (Maw) is best known for playing Roisin in BBC's River City, a role she played for seven years. Other television work includes Scot Squad 2 (BBC Scotland) and Beyond the Bothy (BBC), with theatre credits including Graniteand The Last Polar Bear (National Theatre of Scotland) and The Vagina Monologues (UK Tour).
Tyler Collins (Hen) has appeared on stage in Wee Fat Glesga Wedding (Pavilion Theatre), Little Red and the Wolf (Dundee Rep) and The Last Dream (on Earth) (National Theatre of Scotland), with television credits including Outlander (Amazon Prime) and River City (BBC Scotland).
John Kielty (Joe) has appeared on stage in The Caucasian Chalk Circle, A Christmas Carol and The Cherry Orchard (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh), Tin Forest (National Theatre of Scotland), and Dr Faustus and Scarfed for Life (Citizens Theatre, Glasgow). John has also voiced roles in radio plays including The Quest of Donal Q (BBC Radio Scotland) and Care (BBC Radio 4).
Laura Szalecki (Daphne) has appeared on stage in The Wee Fat Glesga Wedding and The Real Hoosewives of Glesga(Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow), Avenue Q (Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and Forest Boy (Arcola Theatre).
Kim Allan (Maggie) has theatre credits including The Wakeful Chamber (Oran Mor) and The Street (Cumbernauld Theatre Company). Television credits include One of Us (BBC), The Five (Sky One) and Murder (BBC).
Euan Bennet (Horace) is a recent graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where credits include Return to the Forbidden Planet, Cabaret and Merrily We Roll Along.
Kevin Lennon (Twin) has been a permanent member of the Dundee Rep Ensemble, appearing in over 25 productions including The Snow Queen, Whisky Galore, The Tempest, Spirit of Adventure, Anna Karenina and The Cherry Orchard. Other credits include Sunshine on Leith (Dundee Rep/UK Tour).
Duncan Brown (Twin) is a recent graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where credits include Return to the Forbidden Planet, Cabaret and Merrily We Roll Along.
Maureen Carr (The Bairn) has television credits including River City (BBC Scotland), Case Histories (BBC Scotland) andMonarch of the Glen (BBC). On stage Maureen has appeared in Seagulls (Citizens Theatre Company), The Guid Sisters(King's Theatre, Glasgow) and Men Should Weep (National Theatre of Scotland).

The Glebe Street gang have featured in DC Thomson comic strips in the Sunday Post since 1936 and this production celebrates them in their 80th anniversary year. Award-winning Scottish playwright Rob Drummond brings the iconic characters Granpaw, Paw and Maw Broon, Hen and Joe, Daphne, Maggie, Horace, the Twins and the Bairn to life for a Scottish audience in a production filled with laughs, love and comic-strip visuals, all set to a Scottish soundtrack.
This world first theatrical staging draws inspiration from the famous comic strip to bring you a brand new lively and fast paced tale. Can Maggie really, finally be getting married?! Return to Glebe Street, the But an' Ben, and of course the Kirk to find out!
The marvellous artwork and well observed storylines of The Broons mean that everyone recognises a little of themselves in these classic tales and their much-loved characters, which will now be brought to life for a Live Theatre audience.
Rob Drummond is an award-winning playwright who has worked with some of the most prestigious theatres in the UK. His wide ranging work includes the CATS award winning Mr Write (National Theatre of Scotland), Rob Drummond: Wrestling (The Arches), the multi award winning Bullet Catch (The Arches) and Quiz Show (The Traverse), which won a CATS award for best new play in 2013. Rob is now writing new commissions for four of the UK's top theatres, The Traverse, The National Theatre of Scotland, The Royal Court and The National Theatre of Great Britain.
The Broons is directed by Andrew Panton, who in 2017 will become Artistic Director of Dundee Rep. Andrew has held residencies at the Royal & DernGate Theatre, Perth Theatre, Stage Door (New York) and The Stephen Joseph Theatre, where he directed a premiere season of Sir Alan Ayckbourn's work. Recent productions include Love Song (Dundee Repertory Theatre), The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, The BFG and A Christmas Carol (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh),Hansel and Gretel (Glasgow Citizens) and A Sheep Called Skye (National Theatre of Scotland). He is also the creative director, vocal and performance coach for Susan Boyle. The Broons is designed by Becky Minto, with lighting design byGrant Anderson, sound design by Paul Smith and musical supervision and orchestrations by Claire McKenzie.
The Broons is produced and commissioned by Sell a Door Theatre Company. Sell a Door produce diverse, daring and dynamic work and are a leading producer of mid and large-scale touring productions including Avenue Q, Sunset Song, The History Boys, Footloose The Musical and American Idiot. Alongside established titles Sell a Door commission and develop new work creating a varied and distinctive programming for audiences.
