David Hare Adapts Katherine Boo's BEHIND THE BEAUTIFUL FOREVERS for National Theatre Stage; Set for Fall 2014?

According to the Daily Mail, The National Theatre will present David Hare's stage adaptation of Katherine Boo's non-fiction book Behind The Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity. The show is set to open in fall 2014, directed by Rufus Norris. Casting will begin next year.

The story follows three main storylines set in the slums surrounding Sahar international airport in Annawadi. These include a family that recycles slum garbage, a student with dreams of escaping the slums, and a couple who are part of the slum's 'underworld' of politics and sex.

Hare has been writing plays for The National Theatre since 1978. Hare's recent works include: The Blue Room, The Judas Kiss, Via Dolorosa, My Zinc Bed, The Breath of Life, The Permanent Way, Stuff Happens, The Vertical Hour, Gethsemane, The Power of Yes, South Downs and many more. His film and television work features Damage, The Hours, The Corrections, My Zinc Bed, Murder in Samarkand, The Reader and Page Eight. Hare received the 1990 Olivier Award for his play Racing Demon.

Katherine Boo is a staff writer at The New Yorker and a former reporter and editor for The Washington Post. She learned to report at the alternative weekly, Washington City Paper, after which she worked as a writer and co-editor of The Washington Monthly magazine. Over the years, her reporting from disadvantaged communities has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize, a MacArthur "Genius" grant, and a National Magazine Award for Feature Writing. For the last decade, she has divided her time between the United States and India, the birthplace of her husband, Sunil Khilnani. 'Beautiful Forevers' is her first book.
