According to the Daily Mail, Downtown Abbey's Laura Carmichael is set to make her West End debut as Sonya in Christopher Hampton's adaptation of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya.

"I'm terrified and excited. I think you have to be a bit scared. There'd be something wrong with you if you weren't," Carmichael told the Mail's Baz Bamigboye.

Carmichael will join Ken Stott in the title role, Anna Friel as Yelena and Samuel West as Astrov. Rehearsals are set to begin on September 17, with previews starting on October 25. Opening night is slated for November 2, 2012.

Carmichael, well known for playing Lady Edith in the television series Downton Abbey, began her career on stage studying at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She has worked with Thea Sharrock in the play Plenty, as well as appearing in Sheffield's Crucible.

The actress will again be seen in the third season of Downton, which debuts on September 16 on ITV1.
