Celebrate World Theatre Day with Broadcast of Hit Show GOLEM

Following performances at the Young Vic, in the West End, an extensive international tour and a broadcast on the BBC, award-winning theatre company 1927 is to stream a filmed version of its show Golem to coincide with World Theatre Day.

The film, which will be broadcast in English with subtitles available in French and German, has been commissioned by The Space, a commissioning and development organisation established by Arts Council England and the BBC to support greater digital access to the arts. The film received its debut on BBC4 in November 2018.

The broadcast will take place at 7pm on Wednesday 27th March and will be hosted on the Facebook pages and websites of partners around the world including Taiwan's National Theater and Concert Hall, Spoleto Festival USA, HOME Manchester, Brighton's The Old Market, Th tre de la Ville Paris, Belgium's La Libre newspaper and Komische Oper Berlin. The British Council will also be streaming the show as part of its Anyone//Anywhere season celebrating the 30th anniversary of the web.

Mixing live performance and music with film and animation, Golem follows the life of extraordinarily ordinary Robert Robertson, whose life is irrevocably disrupted when he buys a golem a creature who will improve the efficiency of his daily affairs. But when Robert upgrades to Golem 2.0, the show asks what happens when man is no longer in control of machine.

Eerily relevant to our tech-obsessed world, Golem is directed and written by Suzanne Andrade, with film, animation and design by Paul Barritt who jointly won Best Designer at the 2015 Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for the production.

Seamlessly synchronising live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation, Golem is the fourth show from 1927 and had its world premiere at the Salzburg Festival in August 2014. Following a two month sold-out and extended season at the Young Vic and a West End transfer, it has since toured extensively for 3 years, visiting 17 countries including Taiwan, France, China, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Australia and the United States reaching an audience of 122,000. In 2015, Golem won a Critics Circle Award for its design and a Knights of Illumination Award.

1927 is an award-winning London-based company that specialises in combining performance and live music with animation and film to create magical filmic theatre. Founded in 2005 by co-artistic directors Suzanne Andrade and Paul Barritt, the company also includes associate artist Esme Appleton, composer Lillian Henley and producer Jo Crowley. 1927 is based in Margate and London and became an Associate Company of the Roundhouse and HOME Manchester in 2016. Previous productions include The Animals and Children Took to the Streets which has recently been remounted and is currently touring; Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Battersea Arts Centre); The Magic Flute (Komische Opera, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, LA Opera, Minnesota Opera); The Krazy Kat Project (Ensemble Musikfabrik) and Petrushka & L'Enfant et les Sortil ges (Komische Oper Berlin, Deutsche Oper am Rhein).
