Gawn Grainger, Douglas Henshall, Susan Lynch and Joseph Mawle will be joined by LAByrinth Theatre Company member Ron Cephas Jones in the European premiere of Stephen Adly Guirgis' The Last Days of Judas Iscariot directed by Rupert Goold. The Almeida Theatre and Headlong co-production opens on March 28, 2008 with press night on April 3, and is running until May 10. Designs are by Anthony Ward, with lighting by Howard Harrison and sound and music by Adam Cork.
"The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is a time-bending, serio-comic drama in an imagined world between Heaven and Hell that re-examines the plight and fate of The New Testament's most infamous sinner. Throughout the play figures ranging from Pontius Pilate to Sigmund Freud are called to testify in a trial of 'God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Judas Iscariot.' Guirgis' distinct and utterly contemporary voice uses the violent, chaotic energy of modern America, and particularly of New York, to explore timeless questions of free will and responsibility, of faith and fate," describe press notes.
The cast is Shane Attwooll (Butch Honeywell), Amanda Boxer (Henrietta Iscariot), Ron Cephas Jones (Pontius Pilate/Uncle Pino), Josh Cohen (Sigmund Freud/Saint Thomas), Dona Croll (Gloria/Mother Theresa), Gawn Grainger (Caiaphas The Elder/Saint Matthew), Douglas Henshall (Satan), Edward Hogg (Jesus of Nazareth), Corey Johnson (Judge/Soldier), Mark Lockyer (Yusef El-Fayoumy), Susan Lynch (Fabiana Aziza Cunningham), John MacMillan (Bailiff/Simon the Zealot), Joseph Mawle (Judas Iscariot), Poppy Miller (Loretta/Mary Magdalene/Sister Glenna) and Jessika Williams (Saint Monica).
The Last Days of Judas Iscariot received its World premiere at New York's Public Theatre in 2005 with a cast including Eric Bogosian, John Ortiz and Sam Rockwell, directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
