This August, Jenny Horsthuis (Swift in Word, Corbett Theatre; Macbeth, St. Paul's Church; Inside Pussy Riot, Saatchi Gallery) will return to St. Paul's Church to star as the brave hero d'Artagnan in Iris Theatre's thrilling re-gendered The Three Musketeers. Also returning to St. Paul's is Matt Stubbs (A Serious Business, Pleasance Theatre/The Hat Factory; A Midsummer Night's Dream, Stafford Castle; Macbeth, St. Paul's Church) who will be playing Athos - one of the formidable musketeers. Completing the infamous trio are Albert De Jongh (The White Princess, Starz Network; As You Like It, Petersfield Shakespeare Festival; King John, Union Theatre) and Elliot Liburd (Bismillah: An ISIS Tragicomedy, Pleasance Theatre; The Girl With The Iron Claws, Dartington; Titus Andronicus, Fourth Monkey Theatre Company) who will be playing Aramis and Porthos respectively. They are joined by Ailsa Joy (Bad Jews, Theatre Royal Haymarket and UK Tour; Two Gentlemen of Verona, Guildford Shakespeare Company; TimePlays, Hampton Court Palace) as Milady and Bethan Rose Young (The Great Gatsby, Theatr Clwyd; Cosy, Millennium Centre Wales; Dead Born Grow, Frantic Assembly) as Constance. Stephan Boyce (Dangling, Southwark Playhouse; Thirst, The Space; Romeo & Juliet Unzipped, Salisbury Playhouse) who plays Tréville, the moral leader of The Musketeers, will round off this stellar cast.
It's 1626 and a young d'Artagnan sets out for Paris, determined to join the King's Musketeers. There's just one problem, women aren't allowed. Undaunted, our heroine disguises herself as man and manages to befriend the legendary Musketeer trio Athos, Aramis and Porthos. The four fast friends are soon caught up in deadly plot involving the Queen, twelve diamonds studs and the safety of the entire French state. Will this mean war with England? Will all four of our heroes survive? And will anyone discover d'Artagnan's secret?
Directed by Paul-Ryan Carberry, this epic family production is an exhilarating promenade experience in the middle of Covent Garden. Young audiences will be hypnotised as heroic deeds, epic duels (with spectacular sword fights choreographed by Roger Bartlett, Treasure Island 2016) and a lavish masquerade ball all come to life in this huge outdoor adventure. Daniel Winder's adaptation of this classic novel presents the story as you've never seen it before.
Carberry comments, Our team is delighted to be bringing this epic play to life. This bold adaptation will put a contemporary lens on Alexandre Dumas' classic novel making it an even more important and relevant story for today. Our female d'Artagnan will fight to show that her skill, courage and fierce intelligence defines her and not her gender. We have assembled a wonderfully talented cast and I am so looking forward to working with them and the team to create this outdoor summer adventure.
Tickets are available priced £20; Children (under 16), £14; Previews, all tickets £14
