Two rising stars of comedy bring their best material to open Carriageworks Theatre's summer of comedy 9 May. Carly and Tom will be the first of five comedy nights in Carriageworks' intimate upstairs studio including two Edinburgh preview shows in July.
CARLY SMALLMAN: MADE IN PENGE
Penge native and star of ITV2 brings you her Edinburgh Festival smash-hit. Not content with performing at the Hammersmith Apollo, or putting on pop-up comedy in her living room, Carly brings you a show full of funny songs and stories about romance, online abuse and how to love yourself (even if you, too, are a 'fat walrus').
The Penge girl thought she had it all - a new home, a gorgeous boyfriend, and a regular job on Viral Tap(ITV). But after the first show aired she found herself on the receiving end of some very nasty comments about the way she looks. Stuff like this: @itv get Miss Piggy aka @carlysmallman off the air.
So the show is basically about that. How the things you want sometimes aren't the things you wanted at all. How it is possible to fall in love - with yourself. And changing the world a little bit. It's about that too.
Carly's telly credits include Viral Tap (ITV), The Rob Brydon Show (BBC), Secret Interview (Channel 5) and a bunch of talking head shows for E4 and BBC3.
TOM ALLEN in LIFE/STYLE
LIFE/STYLE is a show about taking whatever life throws at you but still trying to look your best. Plus! Are we too obsessed with what other people think? Is there such a thing as a gay lifestyle? And is dressing up in period clothing ever an acceptable way of dealing with anxiety?
Welcome to the world of Tom Allen - where occasional chairs, revolving doors and raised eyebrows are thesparks that take him on a whirlwind of imagination to the depths of insecurity and the beauty of the world he inhabits. Painting with a fine brush the absurd and the petty, the intricacies of snobbery and petty jealousy, it is escapism into the world around us. He is young and old, insider and outsider, confident and fearful, offering audiences his skewed view of the world and unique storytelling ability.
In 2005 Tom won both So You Think You're Funny and the BBC New Comedy Awards. In 2010 Attitude Magazine called him a gay role model. He covered the Edinburgh festival for BBC2's The Review Show, the British Fashion Awards for Net-a-Porter and has presented for E4 and Channel4. As a teenager he was the youngest member of the Noel Coward Society.
