As soon as Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway walked out on to the stage, I felt an overwhelming urge to weep. I never thought I'd see them perform 'Sibling Revelry' live - the last time they were here in London, 17 years ago, I was still at school and hadn't moved to the city. This evening was always going to be a thrill for me from start to finish.
Even if you hadn't waited half your life to see them, though, this would be a stunning, memorable evening. Ann's husky jazz stylings mixed with the clarity of Liz's range is a beautiful combination - they sound so different you can understand why they confide in us that people are always asking them if they're really sisters. Yet the perfect blend of their contrasting voices truly is a piece of sororal magic.
The same goes for their chemistry on stage - their closeness is evident and contrarily that comes through probably most clearly through their little jabs at each other (they're the kind of thing you can only say to someone in jest if you love them very much - sisters will understand what I mean).
With a set packed full of emotion and humour, it feels a bit tenuous and inappropriate to pick out a highlight - but I was hugely moved by Ann's beautiful 'My Buddy/Old Friend', and to hear Liz sing 'The Story Goes On' after so many years of listening to the 'Baby' cast recording was incredibly special.
A cabaret and vocal masterclass is on offer at the Hippodrome Casino this week - please, don't miss it.
