Review: BOTTOM, Soho Theatre Image

Review: BOTTOM, Soho Theatre ImageWilly Hudson walks onto the stage in nothing but a towel, asking a member of the audience to help him put his underwear on. The action is repeated for a t-shirt and some shorts. He continually asks, "Has he text me?" referencing a mystery dude that Hudson went on a date with the previous evening. There isn't a response from the guy yet.

It's uncertain whether he will get a response. This is the first person who Hudson's dated when not under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and it's also the first person that he may need to top (the penetrative form of anal sex). The idea of both terrifies him, and leads him on an investigation into masculinity and queer identity.

Hudson's biggest strength lies in his ability to be impulsive in the moment, and improvise with the audience. His adlibs are genuinely funny and create a calming atmosphere, where anything seems to go. Some moments of interaction seem a ta trite, but when it works, it really is enjoyable and the comedy comes in heaps.

You can tell that everyone is on his side and it's a testament to Hudson's charm. His warm approach invites us to participate fully. However, this endearing personality only goes so far and more is needed to fully encapsulate our attention. The narrative requires greater substance, as at the moment it lacks depth to its meaning.

At a short 45 minutes, Hudson could've spent more time asking the audience questions, probing for answers and delving deeper into some of the topics he only graces the surface with. Themes of queer intimacy and belonging are certainly interesting, and it's a shame that they aren't explored further.

At the moment Bottom remains a tad too erratic, needing a much tighter focus.
